requirements of plants in different environments; crop response to irrigation; water resources, including quality considerations; groundwater economics; cost and returns to irrigation; charging for irrigation water; planning procedures for irrigation development. The book's analysis of the problems, and its recommendations with regard to the technical and socio-economic aspects of irrigation, will be of value to agriculturists, engineers, medical specialists, administrators and politicians, in this increasingly important area of technology.

information on viruses detected in treated wastewater. sludges, liquid manures and polluted coastal waters. The remaining papers evaluate and compare various treatment processes for virus inactivation and discuss water treatment policy as experienced in the Netherlands, South Africa. France and West Germany. Apart from the enormous health implications of its topic, the book carries value as a record of how sophisticated virologic research is setting new standards for the prevention of water-bourne disease.

Activated Sludge Process: Theory and Practice By JERZY J. GANCZARCZYK

Prevention of Oil Pollution Edited by J. WARDLEY-SMITH

This book is concerned with all facets of the activated sludge process and its applications. It maintains a balance between scientific and practical aspects and will therefore be of use to engineers, treatment plant operators, plant designers and scientists as a guide to effective design and operation of treatment plants for specific purposes. It contains an extensive collection of references which may be of use to students and for further research on various topics. The first four chapters are concerned with principles of, factors affecting, modification of and aeration in the activated sludge process. The following two chapters discuss sludge separation and thickening and factors related to excess activated sludge. The last three chapters are involved with the application of the activated sludge process to industrial wastewater treatment, process design and the operation and maintenance of activated sludge plants.

This book is a companion volume to ""The Control of Oil Pollution". It provides a detailed study and analysis of the various sources and effects of oil pollution on water, land and in the air, and a comprehensive examination of the best methods available for preventing the serious threat to the environment. Contents: Sources of pollution, J. Wardley-Smith; Effects of oil spills on land and water, A. Nelson-Smith: Air pollution from the use of petroleum. S. R. Craxford; Pollution occurring during exploration and production on land and sea, D. R. Blaikley: Accidental spills from tankers and other vessels, W. O. Gray: Operational pollution from tankers and other vessels, R. Maybourn: Port operations: spills during loading, discharging and bunkering, R. S. Hawkins; The pipelines contribution, E. M. MELNICK This volume is based on an international congress held in Israel, and is comprised of 30 reports which present work useful in assessing the health significance of enteric viruses in the environment. In the first section, 4 papers describe technical advances for detecting the culturable enteroviruses, the common adenoviruses and more difficult-tocultivate viruses such as hepatitis A, rotavirus and the Norwalk agent. Specific viruses known to be responsible for epidemics of water-borne disease are described together with information on their importance in both developed and developing countries. The second section concentrates on Israel where largescale recycling of wastewaters is carried out. The 6 papers in this section contribute well-documented data on the health risks, including hepatitis A and poliomyelitis, associated with water-borne viruses. In the final and largest section, several papers focus on new methods for virus recovery and quantification, including problems of reliability in the use of coliphages as virus indicators. Other papers show how these new methods have allowed the detection in drinking water of rotaviruses and hepatitis A in addition to the well-known enteroviruses. There is also

Solubility Data Series, Volume 12 (Sulphur Dioxide, Chlorine. Fluorine and Chlorine Oxides) Produced by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) This volume is concerned with the solubility of sulphur dioxide, chlorine, fluorine and the oxides of chlorine in pure liquids, liquid mixtures, aqueous solutions and miscellaneous fluids and fluid mixtures. It forms part of a series produced by the "Solubility Data Project' which is one of the several numerical data projects initiated and operated by various IUPAC commissions. The literature has been searched up until the middle of 1981 in order to produce this volume. Available from Pergamon Press Ltd, Headington Hill Hall, Oxford OX3 0BW, England.
