At the same time, on Patmos and Caloyeri, local eruptions of Na-alkaline basalts occurred. Volcanism is attributed to the marked tensional tectonic phase which has affected the central Aegean since the Middle Miocene. Dipt. di Scienze della Terra, Univ. di Pisa, Italy.

The Eocene Freemans Cove volcanic suite is identified as an example of continental-rifting type intraplate magmatism. Geochemical analysis suggests that the saturated to undersaturated suite's partial melts were derived from metasomatized mantle. Dept. of Geol., Lakehead Univ., Thunder Bay, Ont. P7B 5El, Canada. Can. J. Earth Sci., 20(5):787-801. The structures of ophiolitic basalt and diabase indicate formation as a frozen lid to an underlying magma chamber in a system analogous to presentday mid-ocean spreading systems. Volcanics (pillow lavas, flows, breccias) grade downward into sheeted dikes which dip away from the paleospreading axis. One-way chilling statistics, dike thickness, and dike intrusion sequence analyses indicate a relatively narrow but complex zone of dike intrusion. Diabase contains zones of fracturing subparallel to dike trends, interpreted to reflect oceanic fissuring and faulting. Diabase grades into gabbros across a complex transition.
