Book review Principles and Practice of Emergency Neurology Sid Shah, Kevin Kelly, Cambridge University Press, ISBN 0 521 00980 4 (paperback) This is a comprehensive book on the principles and practice of emergency neurology. In the first section, the essentials of neurological examination, neuroradiology and neurophysiology are presented. The book contains chapters that offer a guide from presenting symptoms to the diagnosis and treatment and summarises the current knowledge of the management of specific neurological conditions. Additional chapters cover traumatic injury to the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, paediatric neurological emergencies, pregnancy related problems, neurotoxicology and brain death. The book brings together contributions from various medical specialties, including emergency medicine, neurology, psychiatry, internal medicine, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery and anaesthesiology. The book is well illustrated and contains tables and algorithms for emergency management. The symptom based emphasis, text, tables and illustrations will guide the emer-

gency physician in the recognition, diagnosis and management of neurological disorders. There is advice for rapid management based on sequential information for the emergency situation and specific details related to the causes of various neurological conditions. Some chapters present detail which does not seem to be essential for emergency management. Too much information may distract from what is urgent and relevant for emergency management. Interestingly, there are a number of differences between current practice in the United States and many European countries. Since the subject is of interest to those in countries outside the United States, it may be fruitful to include authors from Europe and Asia in future editions. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to physicians responsible for emergency management of patients with neurological disorders.
