“Keeping Pace with the Times…”

If given a five word limit to review the newest edition of Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology: Soft Tissue Augmentation, my submission would consisted of these words, “Keeping pace with the times.” This edition “keeps pace” in two defining ways: firstly in its up-to-date content, secondly in its concise format. In light of the ever changing landscape of cosmetic dermatology a new edition is certainly warranted, particularly on the subject of soft tissue fillers. The easily accessible and succinct presentation of need-to-know material is sure to be welcomed by “time-challenged”, but eager to learn, readers.

Applications of soft tissue fillers continue to evolve and expand, new products regularly become available, and adverse events and their management are better understood. Contributors, whom are experts, including several pioneers in the field of cosmetic dermatology, address all of these dynamic aspects. Beginning chapters tackle facial proportion and outline general injection techniques, followed by comprehensive chapters on the numerous options of filler material, their physical properties and optimal use. Subsequent chapters are organized by treatment area, and offer high-yield content on regional anatomy, detailed treatment techniques, expert “pearls”, and review of potential adverse effects. Non-facial treatment areas are also covered. The focus given to neurovascular anatomy is warranted and will be appreciated by both novice and expert injectors. Full sections are devoted to adverse effects, safety improvement, and the management of complications.

Visuals include numerous before and after photos, treatment illustrations often indicating exact injection points, and user-friendly flow diagrams on adverse event treatment protocols. The text is supplemented with a digital version that enables the reader access to numerous treatment demonstration videos. Content is of benefit to both novice and advanced injectors alike, with instruction given on treatments that span from lip and cheek augmentation to the treatment of more advanced novel areas such as forehead, glabella, and brows.

This book fulfills the promise given in the preface by the series editors, “…to quickly impart basic skills as well as advance concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. We focus not on theory but on how-to.”

Like its subject matter, this text along with its concise, complete and readily accessible content, offers immediate gratification and will most certainly assist the reader, novice or expert, in keeping pace with this ever evolving field.
