Proceedings of the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Radiology Research Alliance EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The highlights of the Radiology Research Alliance (RRA) Program for 2004/2005 had a set of specific focused objectives that are briefly described below. 1. In order to establish and enhance cooperative programs seeking to recruit young investigators into radiology research and to strengthen the radiology department’s research programs, the RRA Research Symposium was co-sponsored this year by the American Alliance of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology (A3CR2) and Association of Program Directors in Radiology (APDR). The program included participation by three departmental chairs and three young faculty members who are part of their research programs. The chairs described the resources and planned research development for the department. The particular career journey of three successful young faculty members in radiological research was then presented. The institutions represented include The University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University, and The University of California, San Diego. The detailed symposium program is included later in this report. 2. In order to provide a vehicle for cross-fertilization and communication between and among societies and departmental research programs, an annual Radiology Research Forum was established, with its first meeting this year at the Saturday morning session of the RRA Symposium. Participants summarized the research programs at Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), American Society of Neuro-Radiology (ASNR), American College of

Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN), and Academy of Research in Radiology (ARR). It is anticipated that this symposium will continue on an annual basis as a vehicle to strengthen and extend Radiology Research Programs, both in societies and in academic departments. 3. In order to provide recognition for excellence in radiological research, a New Investigators Award has been established by RRA, along with an Awards Committee chaired by Dr. Etta Pisano, University of North Carolina. 4. The continuing leadership during the next several years for the RRA is established, in large part, due to the dedicated efforts by recognized leaders as officers of RRA in the past, including:

N. Reed Dunnick, MD President 2002 Robert F. Mattrey, MD President 2003 G. Scott Gazelle, MD, MPH, PhD President 2004 C. Leon Partain, MD, PhD President 2005 It is gratifying to report that the following future leadership will include: Lorraine G. Shapeero, MD President 2006 Norman J. Beauchamp, MD President 2007 Jonathan S. Lewin, MD President 2008 Etta Pisano, MD President 2009 William G. Bradley, MD, PhD President 2010

2005 Program The details of the mission, vision, organization, 2005 RRA Research Symposium, 2005 RRA Symposium, and key elements of future directions for the RRA are summarized next.

Vol 12, No 12, December 2005

MISSION The mission of the RRA is to help departments establish and improve radiology research programs. Because research problems are often complex, we strive to encourage and enable multidisciplinary research. We will stimulate innovative approaches to solving research-related problems by conducting research symposia at the annual meeting of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR). The RRA meets annually during the AUR meeting.

VISION The vision of RRA is to become a primary vehicle to define, promote, and strengthen academic research programs in and utilizing the imaging sciences; to energize and enable the recruitment of new, young investigator’s academic careers; and to influence the establishment and funding of image-based research and development in biomedicine
