t y p o g r a p h y is excellent, a n d it seems unfortunate that so exemplary a work should be marred by faulty illustrations M a n y of the cuts are r e n d e r e d annoyingly indistinct by b e i n g unnecessarily crowded, and blurred by carelessness in their preparation or printing, or both. In a text-book like this, i n t e n d e d to be studied as a whole from end to end, the absence of an index m a y p e r h a p s be more readily c o n d o n e d than in a book of reference, to be consulted occasionally for information on special subjects. Lloyd \Viegand, from t h e Committee on Science and the Arts, presented an abstract of the investigation a n d conclusions of the committee in the case of the m e t h o d of m a n u f a c t u r i n g truck-wheel centres invented by Mr. Samuel M. Vauclain, a n d carried o n extensively at the t~aldwin [.ocomotive Works. Prof. Colem.an Sellers, by invitation, gave an excellent description, with illustrations, of the plans of the Cataract Construction Company, for the utilization, to the extent of 120,000 horse-power, of the water-power of Niagara Falls. T h e speaker's r e m a r k s e m b r a c e d also some account of observations upon subjects of e n g i n e e r i n g interest, m a d e by him during a recent visit to Europe as one of the Board of C o n s u h i n g Engineers, commissioned by the Company to examine a n d report upon the most recent methods and examples of power transmission, a n d as r e p r e s e n t i n o the United States on the International Niagara Commission a n d k i n d r e d subjects. (Referred for publication.) The t h a n k s of the meeting were voted to the speaker, with the request that he continue his r e m a r k s at the next stated meeting. In acknowledging the action of the meeting, Prof. Sellers stated that though he might b e u n a b l e to do so at the June meeting, h e would take pleasure in addressing the Institute at some later date. Mr. W. N. J e n n i n g s exhibited a second i n s t a h n e n t of lantern views illustrative of characteristic local subjects. T h e s e were well received.
