Proceedings of the V International Conference on Boar Semen Preservation Held at: Doorwerth, The Netherlands, August 24–27, 2003 The first conference in this series began in 1985 with the first meeting in Uppsala, Sweden. The second meeting was held in Beltsville Maryland, USA in 1990. The third meeting was held in Mariensee, Germany in 1995. The fourth meeting was in 1999 a deja vue in Beltsville. With this fifth meeting we are now in the third millenium in the year 2003 in Doorwerth, The Netherlands. We are proud to publish the proceedings of this meeting in a special issue of Theriogenology. This special issue of Theriogenology not only provides the participants of the fifth conference in this series, but also the interested readers of Theriogenology, with all updated scientific, practical and technical information that was provided by the invited speakers. Besides this a full coverage of all poster abstracts is included as appendix. The purpose of the conference series originally was and still is to stimulate thinking, research, and application of principles regarding preservation of semen and artificial insemination of swine worldwide. It brings together scientists, practitioners, and technical experts so that they may discuss varied topics concerning swine reproduction, a field of vital importance in today’s scientific world. We hope that the time spent in Doorwerth was beneficial for each of you and that you enjoy reading the Proceedings. The organizing committee has accepted the invitation of colleagues in Canada to host the sixth International Conference on Boar Semen in Guelph (Ontario) in 2007. This is very fitting venue for the next conference in that Canada has played such a leading role in swine AI over the past decades.

Acknowledgements We are indebted to the many supporters who have come forth to give their financial support to the conference. Each one is listed below.
