Internet commerce Lion to build internet ordering system for chemical products In 2003 Lion Corp will launch an internet-based system which will connect outside sales agents and group production units, offering its corporate customers an ordering system for products including detergents and surfactants. The move should enable the firm to reduce its staff in this area from ten to five. Lion’s sales of chemical products came to Yen 33 bn in the year ended Dec 2001, about 10% of its overall sales. Waste treatment Kao increases waste-tracking to reduce waste output Kao Corp has started to track waste generated in the production of 260 products, including shampoo, soap and laundry detergent, on a processby-process basis. For example, investigations into the processes used to produce shampoos and rinses enabled the company to reduce waste generated by filling processes by 139 tonnes/y. Toxicology Cosmetics production without animal experiments soon The EU parliament and the EU council of ministers have agreed on an amendment to the EU cosmetics directive under which cosmetic companies will soon have to forego animal experiments when developing soaps, shampoos, or skin creams. For those areas for which there are no alternative tests, animal tests can be used until 2009. Colgate-Palmolive obtains liquid dish cleanser patent Colgate-Palmolive Co obtained US Patent No. 6 444 636 for a liquid dish cleaning formulation containing hydrogen peroxide. The antibacterial liquid dish cleaner also contains alkyl sulfate, a sulfonate surfactant, a solubiliser, water, a magnesium inorganic salt, polyethylene glycol and a proton donating agent.
