NEWS are supplied pre-assembled, with the rear seal locked in by the cover. The connector terminals have current ratings up to 13A, and utilise the Molex XRC design, thereby enabling harness makers to use their existing assembly tooling. Developed by Molex Inc of Lisle, Illinois, USA, the ML-XT system is designed for automotive applications, which demand extremely competitive pricing, whilst imposing some of the toughest temperature, vibration and ingress-hazard conditions encountered by electrical wiring. Intelligent bearing technology trialled in railway and wind-energy sectors

S

KF reports that it is now applying Insight – its bearing health management technology – in several high-end industry applications. According to the firm, which supplies bearings, seals, mechatronics and lubrication systems, the technology uses self-powered, intelligent wireless sensors integrated into bearings to provide instant condition monitoring data via the Internet. The technology is now undergoing trials in challenging projects in the wind-energy and railway industries. Applying SKF bearing health management algorithms to the data provided by Insight enables an ‘adaptive’ approach to maintenance, says the company. Whilst traditional condition monitoring detects bearing damage, Insight spots the abnormal conditions that cause the damage and can take action to prevent damage. ‘It goes beyond current ‘sensorised’ bearing technology by integrating a broader range of sensors, and could include self-powering and intelligent wireless technology,’ explained Ronnie Spolidoro, Business Development Manager, SKF Insight. ‘These bearings are “connected” to the SKF Cloud – giving customers access to a range of SKF diagnostic and support services, which ensures complete bearing health management.’ Insight monitors dynamic parameters such vibration, temperature, lubrication condition and load, 4

and informs the user when conditions are abnormal and can threaten to cause bearing damage. When it was launched, at Hannover 2013, it was a technology concept – a way in which maintenance engineers might improve condition monitoring by keeping tabs on bearing health. Two years on it is a fully functioning system running in customer pilot projects, capable of supplying data directly to diagnostic centres for better condition monitoring via the SKF Cloud using SKF @ptitude. From here, dashboards and reports can be supplied to the plant operator, machine manufacturer, SKF or any other authorised person with Internet access. The data also can be accessed on mobile devices, such as iPads. One of the most promising areas of application for Insight is in wind-turbine monitoring, because of the huge cost of maintenance. The company is already working with a wind-turbine customer to develop such a system. It measures dynamic bearing information in the true operating state and then wirelessly communicates it to remote monitoring centres or local maintenance crews. The company is developing a similar system for the railway sector, for wheel-end bearings – critical components that are usually changed at set intervals, regardless of their condition. Production starts at Trelleborg’s new aerospace facility in France

T

relleborg Sealing Solutions says it has cemented its strong position in the aerospace sealing market in Europe by starting manufacturing at a new facility in Condé-sur-Noireau, France. In parallel, the business area’s manufacturing, engineering support and sales structure has been realigned in recognition of the international nature of the aerospace business. The company’s 3500-m2 facility, which will employ around 100 executives and skilled workers, is the result of an investment of approximately E5 million, funded by Trelleborg

NEWS/IN BRIEF in conjunction with the Calvados Council and the Community of Municipalities of the county of Condé. The manufacturing site replaces an existing facility in the area. ‘Demand for high-performance sealing products is favourable in the aerospace industry,’ said Claus Barsøe, Business Area President, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. ‘This facility will be an effective resource for our existing and future aerospace customers. The choice to keep aerospace manufacturing in France shows Trelleborg’s commitment to the aviation industry within the country.’ The realigned global aerospace organisation for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, Global Marketing Aerospace, will act as a focal point for the products and systems provided by more than 15 of the firm’s manufacturing facilities dedicated to making products for the aerospace sector. At a local level, specialist engineers liaise with customer design teams, whilst logistics teams coordinate delivery globally. Michel Prouff, Director, Global Marketing Aerospace, said: ‘We have seen a trend for our aerospace customers to become fewer and larger through mergers and acquisitions. Recognising that manufacturing may be in one region, whilst engineering is in another, we have set up our aerospace marketing structure to reflect that.’ ‘Importantly, our expert local engineers can work with our customers’ engineers in their local language. Then our international logistics network can ensure delivery, where required and as required, from our worldwide manufacturing facilities, supplying components that comply with all required aerospace standards.’ The new Global Marketing Aerospace structure offers a one-stop-shop for aerospace elastomer and plastic sealing products, with strong R & D support and in-house manufacturing – providing components that are compliant with all aerospace quality and process standards.

al for its MorSafe clamp for offshore applications. The new bolt renewal clamp is used to safely change out bolts on flanges that are in operation, including four-bolt flanges. Paul Holland, Technical Services Manager, Hydratight, said: ‘Customers recognise the benefits of Hydratight’s bolt renewal service, but for integrity and process validation purposes often request an independent assessment of the MorSafe clamp by a globally respected organisation. Type approval from DNV GL will meet this request and complement the extensive testing and engineering evaluation work carried out over the past two years.’ The need to replace corroded or damaged bolts that are fitted to live pressurised flanges is a common need for many offshore operators to extend the reliability and life of their ageing assets without disrupting the day-to-day operations. Typical applications for MorSafe clamp are:
