Professor Dr S. Middelhoek: A Biography

ProfessorDr S. Middelhoek Simon Middelhock is professor of electronic instrumentation at the Electrical Engineering Department of Delft University of Technology. He was born in Rotterdam in !931. In 1956 he received the M.Sc. degree in physical engineering from Delft University of Technology and in 1961 his Ph.D. (cure laude) in mathematics and physics from Amsterdam University. From 1956 to I969, he worked at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Switzerland, and at th~ IBM Thomas L Watson Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, USA. He was first engaged in thin m~gnetic film research and later developed the technology for a 12 GHz I p m gate MESFET. From 1977 to 1980 he was dean of the Electrical Engineering Department in Delft. Professor Middelhoek is an IEEE fellow. In !984 he received the IEEE Centennial Medal and in 1985 the Callendar Medal of the British Institute of Measurement and Control. Since 1991 ~e has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science, and in 1996 he became a foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering, USA. The main research subjects of his project group are physical effects in silicon, silicon sensors and offset correction.
