The Conference on Determination of Molecular Structure bv Microwave Soectroscouv and Electron Diffraction was initiated by Professor Zeil in 1977. He organized this conference again in 1980 and had promised to organize also the 3rd conference in TUbingen in 1982. This year we would have celebrated his 60th birthday, but he died untimely on November 28, 1980.
Werner Zeil got his Phil degree in chemistry at the university of Karlsruhe. As an assistant with Professor Paul GLinther, he completed his "Habilitation" in 1958 and became professor of chemical physics at the university of Kiel in 1963. In the following years he was offered chairs of physical chemistry at the universities of Giittingen, Bonn and Ulm. He decided in favour of Ulm, since this was the greatest challenge for him. As a founding member of this university he was the first professor in the faculty of natural sciences and mathematics and he planned and orqanized the beqinninq and development of this faculty for the first few years. This effort and achievement was later honoured by the bestowal of the Universitv Medal. In 1972 Professor Zeil was offered the chair of physical chemistry in kibingen which he accepted. Very soon he became a prominent member of this university as well.
Professor Zeil's scientific interests concentrated on geometric and dynamic structures of molecules in the gas phase. Very early, in 1954 he started microwave spectroscopy and many initiatives and contacts to other laboratories in Germany and Europe originated from him. He was active not only in microwave spectroscopy but also in many other fields of research, such as electron diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, nuclear quadrupole and nuclear magnet ;ic resonance spectroscopy, the measurement and interpretation of dielectric constants and theoretical aspects of chemical bonding.
With his untimely death we lost not only a strong, generous and highly fair friend, but also a prominent community.
