In 1993, Sharon McKinley was appointed to the first position of Professor of Nursing in Critical Care, established at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and sponsored by the N o r t h e r n S y d n e y Area H e a l t h Service, and by Royal North Shore Hospital in particular. The Professorship is intended to develop nursing practice and scholarship in t h e clinical e n v i r o n m e n t , and collaborative research between the clinical and academic sectors. Sharon McKinley came to the Professorship with extensive experience in critical care n u r s i n g , mainly in intensive care. N o w , 2 years into her 5-year appointment, Sharon believes that much progress has been made towards achieving the goals of the position. V a r i o u s r e s e a r c h projects - i n v o l v i n g collaboration w i t h clinical staff - are in progress. Recently, the nurses in intensive care have been e n c o u r a g e d a n d a s s i s t e d in u s i n g published research to decide on t h e best w a y s of d e a l i n g w i t h clinical p r a c t i c e problems they have identified. The clinical staff have responded keenly to this initiative to p r o m o t e research-based practice, a n d have benefitted greatly from the expertise of Critical Care Nursing Research Officer, PhDtrained Jane Cioffi. As well as promoting the use of research, this process has identified areas of practice which will benefit from original research. S h a r o n ' s p o s i t i o n as clinical p r o f e s s o r involves research leadership for n u r s i n g within the Hospital and Area Health Service. Her role includes contribution as a member of the h u m a n research ethics committee, c o o r d i n a t i o n of a n a r e a - w i d e r e s e a r c h network and teaching research in inservice p r o g r a m s , as well as advising individual staff members on their research projects.

Sharon McKinley With the professor/director of intensive care and the unit's scientist/technician, Sharon is currently leading a project - on behalf of the Australian International Development A s s i s t a n c e B u r e a u - to set u p a h i g h dependency unit in the National Hospital of Western Samoa. In this project, a six-bed unit is being furbished to provide care to patients of all ages with the spectrum of s e r i o u s illnesses e x p e r i e n c e d in Samoa. When the unit is ready to open the project team will carry out education in the care of seriously-ill patients, both in Australia and in Samoa. The professorship in critical care nursing w a s established in conjunction with UTS g r a d u a t e d i p l o m a s in i n t e n s i v e c a r e , cardiothoracic, neuroscience, operating room and nephrology nursing, sponsored by the Northern Sydney Area Health Service and Royal N o r t h S h o r e H o s p i t a l . O n the evidence of progress to date, these two joint initiatives between the tertiary education and health service sectors are achieving their desired o u t c o m e s in the d e v e l o p m e n t of nursing practice.
