robots. It provides for various types of part/tool transport and (using an Acramatic APC-2 process control computer) schedules the part movement within the cell. An IBM PC XT microcomputer handles all part program information within the cell and also gathers management information during the cell’s operation. The authors recommend evolution of an FMS, with gradual addition of workstations to one cell and with the controller at first acting only as a stand-alone data management facility. Eventually, as experience is gained, the controller can be interfaced to a higher level of computer located away from the shop floor to take advantage of dynamic rescheduling and long term production planning.

The Hommel Tester TlOOO is a stylus instrument designed for surface roughness measurement on the shop floor. The traverse unit can be instatled either on top of the main unit (as shown) or, when measuring the texture of a large surface, directly on the work. In that case it rests on four feet which maintain the pick-up arm in the correct attitude. The work surface does not need to be horizontal and the traverse unit can function when it is inverted. The main unit processes signalsfrom the pick-up and displays the measurements-parameters that can be measured at f?,, R, and R,. Two versions of printer are available as options: one is alphanumeric, the other can also record roughness profiles. Hahn & Kolb (Great Britain) Ltd. strain Low-loss optical fibre connectors, splicesand couplers require mirrorflat fibre end-faces perpendicular to the fibre axis. Newport’s F-IM2 micro-interferometer provides a fast, convenient means to measure fibre-end cleave angle and surface quality. The F-CM2 works with singleand multi-mode fibres. It features a built-in CCD camere and remote black-and-white monitor for highvolume, high-resolution field testing with no operator eye fatigue. The instrument consists of a miniature Michelson interferometer and microscope imaging optics. The

fibre is placed in the precision align. .. La ment/ctamp assembfy anct tocussing brings the interference fringe pattern into view on the monitor, providing a contour map of the fibre’s end-face with sub-micron resolutian. Cleave angles can be measured to better than 5 milliradians for a 125 micron fibre. There is no risk of damage to the fibre, says Newport, since no physical con@ct with the end-face is required. The F-IM2 is available in versions meeting USA atid~European (CCIR) video standards. Newport Corporation,. 18235 Mt. Baldy Circle, W Box 8Oft0, Fountain VaHey, CA 9278-8020, USA
