coke on deactlvatlon

of

1994, 40, (l), 19-95.

A large-pore hydrodemetalation catalyst was treated with anthracene (AN) or a bitumen feed (BIT) in mineral oil solvent to obtain coke levels up to 12% carbon. In some runs, carbazole was added to the AN-coking run and in others, a nickel porphyrin compound was added to the BIT-coking run. Physical properties of the coked catalyst were determined, as well as catalyst activities for hydrogenation and for hydrodenitrogenation using a mixture of naphthalene and indole in n-heptane. It was found that the coke produced via BIT appeared to be porous, while that from AN was nonporous. A significant enhancement in nitrogen on the catalyst over that in the bitumen feed was observed.

Magnetic-tleld augmented Iron particles In a hydrocarbon

sedimentation

Settling velocities for fine Fe particles in a hydrocarbon fluid were increasd bv 50-70% bv treatment with maenetic field. Settling velocities decreased Gith increasiig slurry density. Dekagnetization in an-alternating field at 60 H, for r values 0.4-1.0 s disperses the agglomerates sufficiently to reduce the settling velocities below those of the untreated slurries. The settling velocity increased with increasing particle residence time in a magnetic field for dilute slurries but was insignificantly altered by changes in residence time for concentrated slurries. The results have application in separating fine Fe-rich catalyst particles in slurry-phase Fischer-Trospch synthesis.

The paper discusses the catalytic performance of bimetallic Ru-M catalysts prepared from a series of Ru-M carbonyl clusters in CO hydrogenation. The catalysts derived from Ru-Co, Ru-Fe and Ru-MO bimetallic carbonyl clusters showed high activity and selectivity for higher oxygenates, compared with Ru SiO, catalyst prepared from impregnation of monometallic cluster RI&( 8 O),,.

E. I. et al., Fuel, Apr. 1995, 74, (4). 575-581.

Six methods were tested for the prediction of the surface tension of naphtha reformate and crude oil fractions. The corresponding-state method gave the lowest deviation from experimental values for single cuts. The surface tension-density correlation method gave the lowest deviation for a blend of several cuts.

95102432 Quantum chemical calculation on the desulturlzatlon reactlvltles of heterocycllc sulfur compounds Ma, X. et al.,

Energy & Fuels, Jan.-Feb.

1995, 9, (l), 33-37.

The relative hydrodesulphurization reactivities of heterocyclic sulphur compounds collected from the authors experiments and the literature were correlated with the electronic parameters estimated usin MOPAC-PM3. It was found that the direct hydrogenolytic S elimination f.chrect hydrogenolysis) of sulphur-containing compounds is definitely correlated with the electron density of their S atoms, while the hydrogenation of the thiophenic ring or neighbouring ring prior to hydrogenolysis correlated with the bond order of the most unsaturated bond in the ring. Methyl groups at 4- and/or 6-positions of dibenzothiophene may sterically retard direct hydrogenolysis. Hence, the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring adjacent to the thiophenic ring followed by the hydrogenolysis is a major route for such species.

95102434 Realdual oil hydrodesulturlratlon using dispersed catalysts In a carbon-packed trickle bed flow reactor Lee, D. K. er al., Energy & Fuels, Jan.-Feb. 1995, 9, (l), 2-9. Heavy oil hydrodesulfurization (HDS) was carried out using dispersed catalyst which deactivated less strongly than the conventional supported catalyst. Various kinds of transition-metal compounds containing either molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, or cobalt were tested as dispersed catalyst precursors individually or in combination. Experiments were performed in a continuous trickle bed reactor under high hydrogen pressure for the feedstock of atmospheric residual oil. To recover dispersed catalysts from the reactant mixture, activated carbon was packed into the reactor on which the dispersed catalytic species happened to be deposited. Of the catalytic precursors examined, the compound containing molybdenum showed the highest conversion for sulphur and asphaltenes.

Reports on a speech made by Serge Tchuruk, P&deni’Directeur General, Total at the IP Luncheon. Mr. Tchuruk spoke on the changing relationship between governments and companies in the energy sector. He pointed to the ‘unprecedented’ wave of liberalisation currently taking place. He went on to say that he believed that even in an open, liberal market, the state will not be absent and will continue to influence the market, in particular through its role in the taxation of petroleum products. 95102440 Chlna makes new onshore reserves bid Buckman, D. The article offers an interpretation of the economic properties and the role of petrol retailing contracts, a question which is of more general relevance for understanding the internal organisation of firms. 95102443 Property dlsputes In the retell market Hunter, D. R. Petroleum Review, Mar. 1995, 49, (578), 132-135. The author discusses how through the process of owing property on the downstream side of oil production, disputes can arise on a number of different matters connected with such properties. Whether they are wncemed with an oil terminal, distribution depot, filling statioq, warehoue or office, the owner or occupier will need to ensure that there IS an adequate lease for the intended purposes, unless of course the property is held freehold; that the outgoings of the property comprising the rent and rates are at the correct level and that the planning consent allows the Intended use to continue in an authorised manner.
