PROCEDURE 1. Place guide pin in gold cylinder (Fig. 1, left). 2. Block out guide pin threads that protrude through the gold cylinder or leave a few threads exposed through the block-out material. Retention of the protective cover caps can be achieved by friction between cover cap and

gold cylinder or by screwing guide pin through gold cylinder cover cap (Fig. 1, center). Make a wax cover cap over the gold cylinder with the guide pin in place. Overwax the marginal junction approximately 0.5 mm (Fig. 1, right). Sprue, invest, and cast the wax cap in conventional manner; precious or nonprecious metal may be used (Fig. 2). Adjust the cast protective cover cap to fit the gold cylinder (Fig. 3). Place a cast metal protective cover cap over a gold cylinder on the prosthesis and proceed with finishing and polishing (Fig. 4).

SUMMARY A procedure has been described that uses a cast metal protective cover cap during finishing and polishing of gold implant attachment cylinders. The use of these protective cover caps has been found to make it easier to maintain marginal integrity between implant attachments and gold cylinders.
