BOOK REVIEWS Advances in the Biosciences, Vol. 9. International Conference on Prostaglandins. Edited by S. BURGSTROM & S. BERNHARD.887 pp. Pergamon Press. Vieweg. 1973. 420. THIS is the result of the International Conference on Prostaglandins held in Vienna in September 1972. The majority of active workers on prostaglandins were present at this conference and the resulting symposium gives a very good account of the present state of the subject. The chapter headings are: 1. Biosynthesis. 2. Metabolism. 3. Analytical methods. 4. Discussion on analytical methods. 5. Biological activity and structure. 6. Metabolic effects. 7. Prostaglandins and adenyl cyclase system. 8. Metabolic effects. 9. Respiratory system. 10. Gastrointestinal system. 11. Renal system. 12. Circulatory system. 13. Inflammation. 14. Nervous system. 15. Termination of pregnancy. Steroidogenesis. Ovarian function. Male reproduction. There is also a summary of a round table discussion on the Regulation of Fertility. The Prostaglandins, Vol. 1. Edited by PETER W. RAM~ELL. 400 pp. Plenum Press. 1973. $29.50. THIS is a textbook, the first volume of a multi-volume. The chapter headings are: 1. Introduction. 2. Chemistry. 3. Biosynthesis. 4. Autonomic neurotransmission. 5. Renal homeostasis and the hypertensive state. 6. Skin. 7. Lungs. 8. Ocular effects. 9. Cardio10. Lipid metabolism. vascular action. 11. The hyperthalamus-pituitary-endocrine system. 12. Gonadal function. 13. Clinical use of prostaglandins in reproduction. There are 18 authors contributing to the book. The Bile Acids. THIS volume provides a useful summary of our knowledge on the development of the kidney. In particular the author is concerned with quantitative measurements of renal structure and function during growth in infancy and childhood. The

Dominant Focus, Electrophysiologlcal Investigations. Translated from the Russian. 220 p. Plenum. 1973. $37.00.

By V. S. RUSINOV.

THE ORIGINALRussian text of 1969 has been corrected and revised by the author for the new edition. The book is an account of the work based on the concept of Ukhtomskii, that the dominant focus is a temporarily dominant reflex system controlling the activity of neural centres at a given moment, the influence of particular cortical foci on particular efferent systems under these circumstances is variable in time and the “centre” loses its role as an apparatus with a special functional significance. The way in which the dominant focus occurs and alters in the cortex and during conditioning is discussed.
