plete primary school education. The injuries were often trivial. Conversion symptoms and signs of depression were most frequent and pain was reported in 98%. While compensation was still unsettled there was failure to respond to treatment. None of the cases fitted current criteria for hysteria except the conversion features. The author concludes that accident neurosis is essentially an hysterical or conversion manifestation.

This useful review article presents a survey of papers dating back to 1960 in which psychological tests of intelligence or personality were given to subjects with migraine or tension headache. Most of the studies were done with control groups not suffering from headache. Most headache groups so studied described themselves as more neurotic and more forgetful than controls. Four MMPI studies are in considerable agreement, finding a common profile of the “Conversion V” for cluster, migraine, and tension headache patients. The reviewer emphasizes the importance of controlled studies but does not discuss selection factors which are also important.
