Proposed UK take over of Swiss based company DRG plc has announced that, subject to overseas governmental approval, it will take over the Swiss based adhesives products manufacturer, Cellux Group, which has a turnover greater than SFr 100 million and employs 350 people in 10 countries. According to DRG, the acquisition will make it one of the world's major producers, adding to its well known
brands a range of technical, industrial, consumer tapes, sealants and adhesives. In the immediate future Cellux will join with Sellotape, Kwikseal and Flowlock to establish DRG's new Adhesive Technology Division.

Preview The aim of the Second International Conference Bonding in Manufacturing (FSK), being held in Bremen, FRG, on the 4 - 6 October 1989, is to bring together scientific and applied knowledge in bonding. Organised by members of a committee of DECHEMA (Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Chemisches Apparatewesen, Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V.) and DVS (Deutscher Verband fur Schweil~technik e.V,), the meeting will include some English language papers alongside the bulk of the German language papers being presented. There will be simultaneous translation from German into English. For further information on the conference please contact:

surface analysis, surface modification and fibre - matrix interaction); Adhesive testing and analysis (including new tests, nondestructive testing, finite element analysis, evaluation of adhesive tests and durability testing); and Abhesion (including how to avoid abhesion and lubrication). There will be a poster section on the 19 February with a short course on The Principles of Adhesion preceding the meeting on the 17-18 February. The first circular and call for papers has been issued for Speciality Polymers '90, the fourth international conference in the biennial series, which is to be held on 8-10 August 1990 at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Organised and sponsored by the journal Polymer, one of the aims of this conference series is to attract an international gathering of leading authorities to discuss the latest research and developments in their field. The topics selected as the theme for the 1990 conference are electro-optic polymers and highly ordered fibres and films. The scientific programme will comprise invited papers, oral contributions and poster papers. Submission of abstracts should be by 12 January 1990. For further information contact: Mrs

being held on 21-24 May 1990, at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The purpose of these conferences is to encourage active participation and the exchange of information pertaining to the fundamental science, rather than the technological issues of composite materials, with active participation encouraged from both academic and industrial researchers. Areas of special interest in which papers are invited are: controlled interphase; structural characterisation of interfaces and interphases; properties (including
Hysol Aerospace Products, USA, have produced a Surface Preparation Guide related to Structural Adhesives. The 12-page booklet covers, general considerations; degreasing metals and non-metals; surface abrasion; and chemical treatment. There is also some mention of hazards and caution which must be exercised. The bulk of the publication, however, comprises surface treatment tables specifying adherend material by type, cleaning, abrasion or chemical treatment and

The first issue of CASSette, the newsletter of the Center for Adhesive and Sealand Science (CASS) at Virginia Tech, USA, has been published. In his Welcome/Rationale, Director of CASS, James P. Wightman, states that one of the goals of CASS was to establish a quarterly newsletter which will serve as a means of communicating aspects of the programme at Virginia Tech to members of the adhesive and sealant community. Regular features in the CASSette will be highlights of the research activities of selected faculty and graduate students. A listing of technical meetings will also be included.
