Pulmonary infection

AIDS has a substantial impact in the epidemiology, incidence, and manifestations of some of these infections. Sources of infection in patients with AIDS are reviewed on the article by Castañer et al. Awareness of the varied radiographic appearances of pulmonary fungal infections should facilitate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Franquet et al. deal with the manifestations of fungal diseases in inmunodepressed patients. Tuberculosis is the most common mycobacterial infection of the chest and has been known to affect mankind since biblical times. The article by Andreu reviews the classical manifestations of TB, as well as less common manifestations and complications of long-standing TB. I hope this issue will provide basic information about pulmonary infection, needed for everyday practice and will prove useful to radiologists dealing with chest disease. The aim of this issue of EJR is to remind us that pulmonary infections, despite a long history of advances in their diagnosis and treatment, remain still as an area of concern for the radiologist and our clinical colleagues, who bear the ultimate responsibility for treating the patients. The article in bacterial pneumonias by Vilar et al. provides an update on pulmonary infections and emphasizes the importance of community-acquired pneumonias.
