Haested software chosen for major Panama water supply and sewerage systems project

Suppliers to spend billions on products

QuantX Wellbore Instrumentation Ltd has taken over UKbased Plus Design Ltd, an in-well electronic monitoring research & development technology company that manufactures downhole products for the oil and gas service sector.

IDAAN, Panama's Institute for National Water Supply and Sewerage Systems, has selected Haestad Methods' water distribution and sanitary sewer modelling software for application in a major project in Panama.

Plus Design products are used in the downhole monitoring sector, having developed and manufactured in-well sensor and electronic devices for QuantX and a number of the permanent gauge and Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) monitoring service companies.

“IDAAN has selected WaterCAD and SewerCAD based on the institution's positive experience with Haestad Methods' software and support services over the years,” said Joseph Johnson, Chief Project Engineer for IDAAN. “Our team has been equally impressed with the software's ease of use, accurate modelling capabilities, and reliable results.”

The latest report from industry analysts McIlvaine Company predicts that suppliers of air and water pollution control equipment and suppliers of power plant generating systems will purchase more than $30 billion of products and services this year. The report comes after analyzing the needs of 10,000 companies supplying goods and services for air pollution control, water pollution control, liquid filtration and separation, water treatment, power plant combustion and steam generating systems, and contamination control systems.

“This acquisition provides an immediate market for Plus Design products and a direct route to market for a number of the new technologies we have been testing. The combined strength of Plus Design's technology and manufacturing capability with QuantX’s sales network will ensure the business has a robust future,” said Eric Atherton, Managing Director of Plus Design.

Pegler and Louden consolidates distribution centre Pegler and Louden, distributors for Flowserve, ITT, Westlock and Crane in the UK and Ireland, has consolidated its sales and customer support activity into the company's National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Nottingham. Customers of the company can now access stock in excess of £2.5m of valves and actuators either directly through the NDC or via the BSS Industrial network of 59 branches, spanning from Aberdeen to Plymouth. Pegler and Louden was acquired by The BSS Group PLC in the autumn of 2003 and has been integrated with BSS Flow Control Solutions to form a new, independent, stand-alone operation.

Haestad’s software will be used to help improve and expand the institution's 2,700 miles (4,250 km) of water mains and 700 miles (1,000 km) of sanitary sewers. These systems serve over 2.9 million people in eastern Panama, including customers in Pacora, Tocumen, and nearby areas. Highlights of the project include: * Constructing a new water treatment plant with a production of 12 million gallons per day * Repairing and replacing pipes, valves, hydrants, and accessories * Constructing a new distribution

network in eastern Panama * Implementing a SCADA system to control the entire network * Constructing a new water intake and 6.25-mile (4-km), 25inch (600-mm) conduction line. “WaterCAD is the perfect solution for this project given its ability to manage rich modelling scenarios,” Johnson continued. “The software's reporting and visualization tools will be critical in helping our team spot areas that require improvements.” The contract between Haestad Methods and IDAAN also includes two onsite training programs, which are scheduled in Balboa, Panama, from July 19 to July 30, 2004. IDAAN participants will earn an A+ Modeler Certificate for each course completed on water distribution and sanitary sewer design and modelling. "Haestad Methods' training programs have been customized to meet the unique needs of both IDAAN's modelling goals and project deadlines," said Juan Carlos Gutiérrez, Engineering Support Manager, Latin America, Haestad Methods. "This type of post-sales support has played a major role in establishing the dominance of Haestad Methods' products in the region."

Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation receives modernization contract for Callahuanca Voith Siemens’ Hydro Power Generation, a Group Division of Voith, in São Paulo, Brazil, has signed a contract with Edegel SAA in Peru on the complete modernization of Callahuanca hydropower station. The total volume of order for Voith Siemens Hydro is around 10 million. The scope of supply covers three generating units with horizontal Pelton turbines and all auxiliary systems. It is the first time that a modernization of that importance is made out of Brazil by Voith Siemens Hydro São Paulo. Callahuanca has four horizontal

Pelton units with a total of 73 MW. Three units totalling 38 MW were installed in 1938, the fourth unit with 35 MW followed in 1958. The station has had an installed capacity of 73 MW. The three smaller units are now to be completely modernized, increasing the output by 25%. The Callahuanca hydropower station is located in the Andes Mountains, 60 km east from Lima, in the district of Huarochiri. The hydropower station generates energy from effluents into the Santa Eulalia and Rimac rivers.

Most suppliers do not physically manufacture the core product or element in the systems they sell. Often a steel fabricator is the supplier of the core product. Pumps, valves, controls instrumentation, mechanical contracting, and other products and services are sub-contracted. As a result, the most important market for many product and service suppliers is the OEM and not the end user. One company may adopt the strategy of only selling to the OEM. Another will be content to sell replacement products and will concentrate on selling to the end user. The report predicts that over the next five years, suppliers of flue gas desulfurization systems will make purchases of $15 billion for delivery in the U.S. and another $12 billion for delivery to other countries. None of these suppliers will manufacture a single component of the systems they will deliver. Nozzles, mist eliminators, vessels, dampers, piping, controls, instruments, ball mills, mixers, pumps, valves, thickeners, and other components will be purchased. Most will hire mechanical and electrical contractors to provide the construction of the systems. The report goes on to conclude that annual purchases will average $112 million over the next fives years.
