Displays Queen's Awards for map display More than a thousand US F-18 aircraft
are expected to be equipped with Ferranti's combined map and electronic display (COMED) apparatus. This prospective order, together with the 400 COMEDs already ordered, has given Ferranti's navigation systems department two Queen's Awards - one for export and one for technological achievement. The COMED combines a moving map with flight, tactical or sensor information on the same screen. A variety of information can be provided to the pilot from the aircraft's TV, radar and navigation system or held in the unit's computer. Tactical information, airfield data and pilot emergency drills, for instance, can be stored for display as required.
Three map display modes are available. These are north up, with true north at 12 o'clock and the aircraft position symbol centred, track up and track decentred. In the last of these the map is track-oriented but the aircraft position symbol is near the bottom of the display, doubling the look-ahead facility.

Blue LED competitive Gallium nitride forms the construction of a blue LED, available in sample quantities from Hero Electronics. The 5 mm LED, manufactured by a Japanese company, operates at a peak wavelength of 490 nm. The wavelength spread is 80 nm at halfmaximum. The diode's principal drawback is a small viewing angle -- 5 ° either side from the light's normal direction. The LED uses a metal insulated semiconductor structure obtained by growing 164

gallium nitride on a sapphire substrate to provide the blue emission. Zinc provides the intrinsic layer. The LED starts to emit light at less than 4 V and has a typical intensity of 2 mcd at a forward current of 10 mA and at 7.5 V. It operates over the temperature range - 25 ° to 80°C. Applications for the blue LED are expected to include test equipment, computer read-outs and automotive and aircraft instrumentation. Display information requiring high quality moods and 'cool' images, says Hero, are expected to be interested in the device.

Bar display with 101 elements Accurate and reliable meter indication is offered by a red 101-element bar graph display module from HewlettPackard. The display is 106 mm in length and has 1% resolution with LED elements 1.5 mm wide. Package design and drive requirements make the module simple and economical to incorporate into a system or instrument, says Hewlett-Packard. Standard sockets and printed circuit board layouts are accommodated by the single-in-line package The common cathode LED arrangement simplifies microprocessor interfacing for support electronics.
