government agencies. It contains a number of articles including those published in Science. As the title implies, various case studies have been presented. Given the highly contentious nature of the definition of "species", biodiversity", "genetic diversity", and similar terms, the editors have made an heroic effort to address them. The editors describe their presumptions in the introductory chapter and provide the readers with examples of how their views can be implemented. One does not need to agree with the editors' presumptions to benefit from reading various chapters. This book is recommended as a desk copy.

Pesticides in Drinking Water. David I. Gustafson.Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, NY; 1993. 288 pp. (ISBN 0-442-01187-3) $59.95 hardcover. This book is written by a practioner who knows pesticides. The author defines contamination as the presence of pesticides at a level requiring remediation. The author correctly implies that the mere detection of various pesticides in water is not an indication of a hazard, but provides the detection limit of analysis. The three parts of the book are titled: How big is the problem? How does it happen? and What is being done about it? A useful chapter summarizes the monitoring results in various countries. Another useful segment clearly identifies what constitutes environmental friendliness. The book is easy to read and provides sufficient information. It is recommended as a desk copy.

Radioprotection. Environmental Impact of Nuclear Installations. Proceedings of the Joint Seminary from September 15th to 18th, 1992 at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Hansruedi V6lkle and Serge Pr~tre, eds. Federal Office of Public Health, Fribourg, SW; 1993. 612 pp. softcover. This topical issue contains papers presented at a seminar jointly organized by the Soei6t6 Fran~aise de Radioprotection and the Fachverband for Strahlenschutz of Germany and Switzerland. The volume contains a large number of papers covering four major topics: radioactivity release monitoring, environmental dispersion modeling, environmental monitoring, and accident management. Given the level of nuclear activities in France, Germany, and Switzerland, the volume is a valuable compendium of covered topics, particularly, because the efforts of other European countries, such as Austria and Spain, were also ineluded. The publication appears to be the text of the pre-

sented papers enabling the publication of the papers five months after their presentation.

Recreational Water Quality Management. Vol. 1 Coastal Waters. David Kay, ed. Ellis Horwood/Prentice Hall, Inc. Englewood Cliffs, NJ; 1992. 22 pp. (ISBN 0-13-770025-3) hardeover. Most of the papers published in this volume are derived from a symposium held in December 1990. There is sufficient knowledge indicating that bathing in biologically contaminated water can cause diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and skin. The book addresses issues related to recreational use from the standpoint of the U.K. which led to a parliamentary inquiry. The context of this inquiry is presented in the book. Another paper questions the U.S. water quality standards by providing evidence that epidemiological data upon which the U.S standards were based have been superceded by new data indicating flaws in the original assessment. Finally, water treatment methods are described to provide for recreational water of acceptable quality.

Regional Ground-Water Quality. William M. Alley, ed. Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, NY; 1993. 592 pp. (ISBN 0-442-00937-2) $99.95 hardcover. Groundwater management is one of the most significant environmental problems. Accordingly, there are numerous books covering papers presented at a variety of meetings, compilation of texts, and numerous books written by advocacy groups. The practitioners of groundwater quality have lacked a compendium written for them covering the subjects scientifically, accurately, and free of advocacy. Alley's book appears to fill this gap. The five parts of the book include 25 chapters. The first three parts (10 chapters) cover fundamentals, including conceptual aspects of water quality. The next two parts deal with the application of methods described in the first part. The last part includes case studies. This a a textbook for practitioners of groundwater quality. It is highly recommended as a desk copy and as a library reference.
