193A 845259 Numerical analysis of rock masses with planar structure (In French) Guenot, A; Panet, M Proc 5th Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, Melbourne, 10-15 April 1983 V2, PFI81-F185. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1983 An elastoplastic finite element model with two superimposed criteria is used to study the behaviour of stratified rock masses. In the particular case of a footing resting on the crest of a slope, it is shown that, beyond the classical stress and displacement fields, the model provides a good evaluation of the rupture mechanism and the bearing capacity. In situ penetrometer and pressuremeter tests at a controlled dumping site showed high strengths which were difficult to correlate with the high values of settlement recorded. 845261 Rail and road traffic continue during bridge modification Vijay, B S Civ Engng, 1V Y V54, N3, March 1984, P55-57 To improve roadway alignment of Route 15, Maine, USA, structural modifications were carried out on a railway bridge which was limiting clearances. A portion of the north abutment was removed and a new northwest wingwall constructed by driving sheet piles, concreting a new footing and backfilling. 845262 Long-term geophysical observations on the Inguri Dam rock foundation Savich, A I; Iliin, M M; Ezersky, M G; Kalinin, N I lnt Assoc Engng Geol Bull N26-27, Dec 1982-June 1983, P315-319 (Paper to the International Symposium on Soil and Rock Investigations by In Situ Testing, Paris, 18-20 May 1983) During construction of the Inguri Dam, compaction and loading of the rocks under the weight of the structure took place. For monitoring the behaviour of the dam-foundation complex and reservoir banks, geotechnical and geodetic in situ observations and geophysical surveys were performed. The results of these surveys showed that the filling of the reservoir reduced the moduli of elasticity of the permeable fractured and concrete grouted part of the rock mass and that in the process of water ingress into the rock mass, decompaction developed in the foundation, resulting from the back pressure of fissure water. 845263 Permeability tests at the Simly Dam project Haq, I; Hashmi, F A S Int Assoc Engng Geol Bull N26-27, Dec 1982-June 1983, P433-438 (Paper to the International Symposium on Soil and Rock Investigations by In Situ Testing, Paris, 18-20 May 1983)
In situ tests of the permeability of rock surrounding the Simly Dam, Pakistan, indicated that the rocks are open up to 23m depth and the flow is predominantly along the bedding planes (strike wise). This necessitated an elaborate permeability test and test grouting programme, wherein 473 water pressure tests were conducted in 53 boreholes. The permeability test results are fairly comparable to grout intake. This helped in locating the grout curtain and developing criteria for the three-row grout curtain on the left abutment perpendicular to the dam axis in order to intercept strikewise seepage. 845264 In situ measurement of permeability of fine soils (In French) Mienssens, C lnt Assoc Engng Geol Bull N26-27, Dec 1982-June 1983, P483-488 (Paper to the International Symposium on Soil and Rock Investigations by In Situ Testing, Paris, 18-20 May 1983) The in situ measurement of K, the coefficient of permeability of fine soils improves the prediction of settlement velocity of embankments. Specially adapted equipment and a theory are described. A hypothesis is proposed which allows the prediction of Cv, the coefficient of consolidation, by taking into account K measurements and the compression index determined by an oedometer test. Measured settlements of two experimental embankments establish the accuracy of the hypothesis. 845265 Cut-off wall in karstic limestone within the right abutment of Khao Laem Dam Watakeekul, S; Gratwick, C; Freimanis, I In: Rock Mechanics: Caverns and Pressure Shafts (papers to the ISRM Symposium, Aachen, 26-28 May 1982) V1, P485493. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1982 Khao Laem Dam, Thailand, is a 90m high concrete faced compacted rock filled dam. The dam site is in an area of cavernous limestone and treatment to prevent water loss through the right abutment involved the driving of six grouting galleries as the access to fill the concrete into the cavities and to execute the grouting work. Within the abutment close to the dam an area of ungroutable microfractured limestone was encountered. A concrete diaphragm cut-offwall was therefore required between the galleries. 845266 Three-dimensional analysis of no tension materials Casteleiro, M; Onate, E; Huerba, A; Roig, J; Alonso, E Proc 5th Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, Melbourne, 10-15 April 1983 V2, PF231-F235. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1983 An iterative technique to dissipate tensile stresses in no-tension materials using the finite element method has been developed and applied to the linear elastic analysis of an arch dam built in the north of Spain.
