30th U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics
The theme of this symposium, sponsored by the I n t e r n a t i o n a l Society of Rock Mechanics and the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics, is "Rock Mechanics as a Guide for E f f i c i e n t Utilization of N a t u r a l Resources." The objective is to assess the state of the art in the science and engineering aspects of rock mechanics in areas currently c o n f r o n t i n g us. The sessions will emphasize mining and excavation, drilling and exploration, and u n d e r g r o u n d storage. In each area, papers will be selected on basic and applied research as well as experimental and analytical studies. Potential c o n t r i b u t o r s of papers should submit four copies of their abstracts to: 30th U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics, West Virginia University, Mining Engineering Department, P.O. Box 6070, Morgantown, WV 26506-6070 U.S.A. June 25-28, 1989 Trondheim, Norway

Rock at Great Depth
This i n t e r n a t i o n a l symposium, co-sponsored by the ISRM and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, will deal with rock mechanics and rock physics at great depth. Themes and fields of applications include: (1) the mechanical behaviour of rocks exposed in a permanent or transient m a n n e r to high c o n f i n i n g stresses or loading conditions, exceeding the conventional strength of the material; (2) in-situ or laboratory determination of physical characteristics of the rock matrix and the porous or fissured space, and related properties; (3) insitu or laboratory investigation of rock deformability and of the conditions of rupture initiation, propagation and localization of deformations--related theoretical or numerical approaches; and case histories. Languages of the conference will be English, French, German (simultaneous translation).
