Studies were undertaken to determine the growth and rc.>ponsc of mott'C' testis in in vitro culture media. Te.,tes from mice :1 days of age ln'n! culmrt'd in an in vitro system fnr 7 tn l4 days on described culture media ..\fter 7 days of culture, tubular size drcrcaSL'd and interstitial cell cytoplasm decreased. These ckgerwrati\'(' changes were amdioratcd with the addition nf IICG to tlw culture media. The addition of HCG enhanced rhe secretion of androg-en for 11 days nml•·r in vitro t'<>nditioll'.
Herrmann, Schindl, and Bondy: Effed of Estrogen on Steroid I.evels in Plasma and Urine, p. l 03. The present study investigated the e!I<~cts of physiologic lewis of naturally occurring estr<)· genic material on the adrenal steroid levels in plasma and urine and abo determined :\CTH re~pomivcltl'>S mHkr these conditinus. The experiment rc,·ealed that le,·el~ of hvdrncortisone remained tmch:uu;:ed J ftn cstrng:•n administration and there w:1s no sir;nilicant difference in n·spou::c to AC:TH ,,·ith ''r \\ith(>\it estrogen. There was a decn~a,,·d urinan· r<'\1· ing Ic,·el of till~ 17-hydroxy st,•roids after .·strngen administration and the rcspons•• to :\CTH plus estrogen wa~ less than t•J ACTH alone. Urinary pregnanctriol excrNion was diminished after estrogen administratiott and levels were lower after ACTH plu~ estrogen than with ACTH alone. It has been shown that while the administration of estrogen did not affect the plasma levels of adrenal steroids nor their response to ACTH infusions, the excretion of adrenal steroids is significantly decreased. The authors feel that although this may represent iutt~rfercnce with the biosynthesis of these pmdw t9 by estrogen, a more attractive theory is that of a de· layed catabolism brought about by increased protein-binding as occurs with hydrocortisone.
