river bed gave the possibility of cormection with the ovarl~ng water-bearing samls au~ gravels, amd the t : ~ 1 deI~h initially chosen was tharefare increased. %Vne site imvestigation established the levels add character of the deposits present, the dls~ibu~ion of faults amd data f ~ shaft and tummel design. B ~ r ~ s were s~plemented by over-watar seismic surveys. A turmelli~g shield amd com~essed air were specified, because of the possible d a ~ of commection with the river above. M ~ h ! n e excavation was satisfactory in t h e ~ a ~ I s ~ but drilling amd blastimg was required for a full face of samdsto~e. Probing ahead from the face detected water-bearir~ and cla~filled fissures which ware successfully negated usiug cce~ressed air. The general implications of the s i ~ investigation experience a r e reviewed. Auth. Avail: TRRL, Old W o k i r ~ Berks, UK
