Re: Multicenter Analysis of Urinary Urgency and Urge Incontinence in Patients with Anterior Urethral Stricture Disease before and after Urethroplasty L. A. Hampson, S. P. Elliott, B. A. Erickson, A. To the Editor (by invitation): The quality of life for patients with urethral stricture is poor and possibly even worse than those with other lower urinary tract diseases. The reason is likely because of the marked degree of obstruction that causes a broad spectrum of symptoms including voiding and storage lower urinary tract symptoms combined frequently with other signs/ symptoms such as genitourinary pain, urinary tract infection, periurethral abscess, renal failure and even malignancy.1 Hampson et al assess the prevalence of urge related lower urinary tract symptoms before urethroplasty and the effect of urethroplasty on those symptoms. As it turns out, urinary urgency and urge incontinence are quite common in patients with urethral stricture (58% and 31%, respectively) and fortunately most of the symptoms respond to urethroplasty (37% and 74%, respectively). This information is relevant. Knowing that urethroplasty not only improves obstructive lower urinary symptoms and prevents the complications of stricture, but that it also improves urge related symptoms, which typically affect those experiencing the worst quality of life, is important.2 Respectfully, Keith Rourke Division of Urology, Department of Surgery University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
