Letter to the Editor

Re: Response to Dr. Chadwick We thank Dr. Chadwick for his encouraging comments on our paper (Sibert et al., 2002). We agree with him that it is very worrying that our incidence of severe physical abuse in children seems unchanged from the figure quoted by Kempe (1971) three decades ago and suggests a significant on-going public health problem. Proper systematic evaluation of the various primary, secondary, and tertiary strategies currently in place should be a priority on the agenda of those involved in child abuse research. We are sure he is right in that we need to continue to monitor the real incidence of child abuse, and our study does give the opportunity for on-going surveillance. We hope to start a new period of surveillance starting next year. We have now monitored the follow-up of our babies in this study and preliminary results were presented to the Annual Meeting of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (Ranton et al., 2002). A third of the babies sent home are reabused.
