The form at and graphics pull you in. How refreshing. I feel as though I have been swept into the 21st century. The new look and approach will facilitate bridging the gap betw een research, practice, and the public. Congratulations! Stephen J. M oss, D.D.S., M.S. Although I can see some benefits of the new JADA format, they are benefits that I would expect from a professional newsletter. I have great concern that JADA has moved a step away from being a scientific journal. In the past, it has been similar to the Journal of the American Medical Association, a respected journal in medicine, which contains pertinent research reports as well as other scientific articles. For the m any years I have received The Journal, my focus has been on the scientific articles. I w asn’t totally satisfied with The Journal because I believed it contained too m uch social news of the ADA. The introduction of the ADA News took m uch of th at sort of inform ation from The Journal, a significant improvement. I have been a m em ber of the Association since I was in dental school 19 years ago. My annual ADA dues, including my local and 14 JADA, Vol. 122, March 1991
state society dues, total nearly $600. The Journal has been one of the real, tangible benefits of m em bership. I view the form at change as an erosion of those benefits. I subscribe to nine other professional journals and a professional new sletter/ product report. None """ » °f the other professional journals the need to adopt the form at of a newsletter. Of the 160 pages of the January 1991 JADA, fully half w ere advertising. None of the other journals I receive has anyw here near th at much advertising. In view of the annual Association dues, it would seem that a good, scientific journal with less advertising should be in order. A sm aller scientific journal, even if it were issued only every other month, would be more beneficial to me than the present large journal with the new sletter form at and the excessive am ount of advertising. Before you decide to keep the new format, possibly you should survey the entire m em bership of the Association. If the m em bership feels the need for a new sletter as opposed to a scientific journal, dentistry may be moving toward trade status as opposed to being a profession. Jam es B. If a brave m an is nothing more than a successful fool, we can use a hellava lot m ore of this foolishness. The January JADA is the best looking journal I have ever seen! Congratulations, and keep on going. Joseph F. O’N eil, D.M.D. Hammond, La.
I dislike the new JADA format. I find it very sim ilar to m any existing pseudoscience or popular science magazines, including the tear-out inserts. It also seems harder; th at is, more difficult to read. It might be the w idth of columns or spacing. I am not sure. The articles give me the im pression they are opinions rather than good science. Ronald C. H atfield, D.M.D. New berg, Ore.
Congratulations on the new format of JADA. It’s crisp, contem porary and easy to read. In fact, the articles are more interesting. One suggestion: it would help me if the articles contained either a sum m ary at the end or an abstract in the beginning. My compliments on a gutsy move. Richard H. Price, D.M.D. N ew ton Centre, Mass.
The current form at of JADA is disappointing. The question becomes, “Does everything in our world have to be based on the almighty dollar?” Commercial ads throughout the entire magazine dem ote the dem eanor to the level of Dental Management and Dental Economics. It is difficult to consider this publication (JADA) as a professional journal any longer. What a shame. I hope you will recon sider the current commercial form at and revise the thinking to a more acceptable professional approach. H erschel L. Stroud, D.D.S. Topeka, Kan.
Congratulations on the new format
