PUBLICATIONS Geiger Low-Background High-Efficiency Mueller Counter. Technical report No. 33, IAEA, Vienna and Int. Publ., New York, 3 1 pp. 1964. $1 .OO. The problem of measuring solid radioactive samples of low-activity with semi-portable equipment is one that is common to many branches of applied science. This report describes a low-background highefficiency flow counter that was developed between 1959 and 1961 and which has since been in constant use at the IAEA laboratory at Seibersdorf. It will measure samples with activities of fractions of picocuries dispersed in 30 mg of carrier substance.

A good elementary book in radiobiology, suitable for a one-semester course. Begins with physical and biophysical aspects, then radiation effects at the cellular, tissue and organ levels, and concludes with general treatments of radiotherapy, ecology and agricultural applications. H. J. C.

. Mammahan Radiation Lethality. V. P. BOND, T. M. FLIEDNER andJ. 0. ARCHAMBEAU. Acader$c Press, New York, 1965, 340 pp, $9.50. Though it deals with the mammal, the aspects dealing with radiobiological response of cells and cell cultures, particularly with cell cycle and cell population kinetics, are of general implication.

Cytogenetics of CelIs in Culture, Vol. 3. Symposia of the International Society for Cell Biology. R. J. C. HAFLRIS, editor. Academic Press, New York, 1964, 313 pp. $13.00. A compilation of 18 papers, primarily on animal cells, whose concerns may be grouped into 3 categories: (1) DNA replication patterns focusing on new techniques and instrumentation; (2) Chromosomal morphology as affected by hybridization, radiation and toxins; (3) The influence of altered chromosomal complement on cell survival in tissue culture and following exposure to ionizing radiation.

Proceedings of a symposium sponsored by the IAEA, Athens, April 1964. I. Theory of scanning, moving detectors and collimators, stationary detectors, display systems. II. Choice of isotopes and labelled compounds, clinical applications.

Twenty-three articles based on lectures delivered in August, 1963, at a J-week international summer school concerned principally with radiation damage in solids. Articles are all in English, grouped into 8 sections: the general theory of radiation damage; damage in pure metals, in alloys and fissionable materials, in ionic crystals, and in semiconductors; diffraction and scattering phenomena; experimental techniques; and a short section treating diffusion in the solid state. Biological systems are not discussed.
