Unilever patents fabric softener agent Unilever Home & Personal Care USA has received Patent No 6,930,082 B2 for a fabric softening product to be used either as a rinse aid or to impregnate a sheet for use in a tumble dryer. The product comprises at least one organic compound as the softening agent, plus a carrier.

In partnership with the EC, a declaration has been signed by European industry sectors to reduce the use of animals in laboratory testing. Alternative approaches will be sought by the various industry sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, crop protection products, and soap and detergents.

Groups move ahead with expansion of HPV Challenge Program

Finish and Vanish brands boost Reckitt sales

The American Chemistry Council (ACC), the Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) and the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA) are pushing through with the Extended HPV programme (EHPV), which extends the original HPV (high production volume) programme to cover an additional 574 chemicals. The chemical manufacturers will also boost the breadth of safety information made available to the public on all HPV substances. The groups also committed to make available health and environmental information on substances that were not previously covered by the original programme but already meet the high volume threshold. Reckitt Benckiser, the household goods and healthcare giant, reported its strongest-ever quarterly sales growth on 25 Oct 2005, thanks to the success of products such as Cillit Bang cleaner, Finish dishwasher tablets and Air Wick fresheners. Revenues across the group in the three months to the end of Sep 2005 were up 8% to £1.05 bn, and profits rose 16% to £174 M. The company is on track to meet full-year targets of net revenue growth of 5-6% and net income growth in the mid-teens. Shares in Reckitt fell nearly 5% on 25 Oct 2005 before closing down 3.7% at 1724p, on the news that gross margins were flat during the period. Over the year to date, margins fell 10 basis points as a result of higher energy and marketing costs. Sales

Colgate-Palmolive reported growth in worldwide sales and unit volumes for 3Q 2005, with every division posting sales and profit increases. The company had profits before special items of $369.67 M in 3Q 2005. This compares with $329 M a year earlier. Net profits were up from $329 M to $347.2 M. There was a one-off aftertax profit of $61 M from the sale of detergent brands [Focus on Surfactants Sep 2005] but this was more than eaten up by restructuring and other one-off costs. Sales rose from $2.71 bn to a record $2.91 bn, slightly exceeding analysts’ estimates, and reflecting unit volume growth of 5%. The company says its global leadership in toothpaste expanded even further in the quarter with market share reaching all-time highs in the US and other key countries. Unit volume in Oral Care was up 10% worldwide. In North America, sales rose 5% in 3Q 2005 while operating profit increased 2%. In addition to toothpaste, hand dishwashing liquids, fabric conditioners and bar soap all showed gains in market share compared to the previous year. New and recent introductions contributing to growth in these categories include Palmolive Oxy Plus and Cucumber and Melon dishwashing liquids, Irish Spring MicroClean bar soap and Softsoap liquid hand soaps. Latin American dollar sales rose 18% and operating profit 13% in the quarter. In Europe, which accounted for the largest share of worldwide sales in 3Q 2005 at 24%, dollar sales grew 2.5% and volumes 4.5% compared to a strong JANUARY 2006
