1Tokyo Medical and Dental University, 2Kanagawa Dental College, 3Iwate Medical University, 4Saitama Cancer Hospital, 5Tokushima University, 6Toyama Medical Pharmacological University, 7Hokkaido University, Japan The purpose of this paper is to clarify the evaluation of reconstruction of mandible with poly-[L-Lactide] (PLLA) mesh and transplantation of autogenous particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM). Materials were 36 cases (18 malignant tumors and 18 benign lesions) with mandiblectomy in seven hospitals. 17 cases were treated by marginal mandiblectomy and 19 by segmental resection of mandible or hemimandiblectomy. 21 cases were simultaneously reconstructed and the other 15 were reconstructed one year o r more after the first mandiblectomy. 28 cases were with the use of P L L A mesh trays and 8 with PLLA mesh sheets. As for the result, 18 cases (50%) out of 36 e~ises were evaluated as excellent, 11 (31%) as good and 7 (19%) as poor. For the relationship between surgical methods and results, good or excellent cases were 14 of 17 cases (82.4%) in marginal mandiblectomy, and were 15 of 19 cases (78.9%) in segmental resection of mandible or hemimandiblectomy. From these results, it m a y be concluded that a combination of PLLA mesh tray or sheet and PCMB is useful for mandibular reconstruction.
15. Tissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinase Regulates the Resorption of Autogenous Bone Grafts

bone (labeled day 0). The presence of TiMP was detected by rtPCR.
Results I M Bone: TiMP was not expressed by IM bone grafts on days 0-5 and was expressed on days 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 14. The expression of the TiMP on days 6 to 14 coincides with osteogenesis induced by the IM bone grafts. EC bone: TiMP was expressed on days 1, 2 and 3 and disappeared on days 4, 5, 6 and 7 and reappeared on days 8, 9, 10, 11 and 14. The lack of expression of the TiMP on days 4 to 7 coincides with the vascularization of EC bone grafts. The expression of the TiMP on days 8 to 14 coincides with the endochondral ossification. Conclusion TiMP regulates the resorption of autogenous bone grafts andmaintains a balance between bone formation and bone resorption during the early stages of healing of bone grafts.
16. Papilla Mapping with Lingual Nerve Injury and Repair

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Pennsylvania The lingual nerve is a multi-dimensional nerve in providing sensory innervation to the tongue as well as special sensory fibers while provide taste to the anterior two thirds of the tongue. In micro repair of lingual nerve, there are very definite gains in sensory innervation and function t o the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. However, the return of gustatory sensation is very problematic. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fate of tongue papillae following denervation of the lingual nerve as well as post micro repair. Twenty patients were examined status-post lingual nerve injury. Using special stain and glass slabs, the papilla were counted both before and after repair and compared to the control side, i.e, the unaffected Side. Our results, preliminary in nature, indicate a decrease in the density of papillae in both pre and post repair states.
17. Evaluation of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve in Non-United Mandible Fractures
Aim
To investigate the temporal expression of TiMP during the early stages of healing of intramembranous and endochondral autogenous bone grafts in vivo.
Material and methods Forty-eight critical sized defects were created in the skulls of adult New Zealand white rabbits and were filled with i) EC bone (tibia) and ii) IM bone (parietal bone).
