Red cell mass was measured in 101 healthy, nonpregnant women. Whole blood and plasma volumes were calculated from thr total red crll volume and the venous hematocrit. Comparison of women to men of similar heights and weights showed that in women the total red ccl1 volurnc averages 214 ml. less and the plasma volume 8.5 ml. mot-r.
p. 2093. The two methods gave comparable results and showed no significant difference between pregnant and nonpregnant women in the clearance rate from blood of injected tritiated aldosterone. About 1,600 L. of plasma were cleared of aldosterone each day; this volume is close to the hepatic plasma flow. Inasmuch as aldosterone is catabolized almost exclusively in the liver (of the dog), it is suggested that the liver may re-

In 48 cases of threatened abortion, the vaginal smear correctly predicted the outcome in half the cases, serum gonadotropin in two thirds, and thyroxin-binding in 96 per cent. The proteinbound iodine (PBI) was usually somewhat lower in the women who had an abortion than in those who did not. Fetal death probably antedated the changes, in most cases. In late pregnancy, low or abnormal serum gonadotropin was an ominous prognostic sign, even in the presence of normal thyroxin-binding. Leon C. Chesley

p. 751. This child was first seen at 2 and to+$? years. She exhibited growth retardation and behavioral retardation, with an I.Q. of 45. She had prominent rpicanthi, and an open-mouth appearamc. The fifth fingers were incurved. There was no web neck or lymphedema. Less than 2 per cent of the cells from the buccal mucosa were c-hromatin positive. There were many drumstick forms seen in the poiymorphonuclear leukocytes, On chromosomal analysis of peripheral lcukocytcs, approximately one half the cells were X0 and half XX. The authors believe that this is the youngest child reported with XX/X0 mosaicism. Schuyler G. Kohl
