13th Meeting of the EAU Section of Oncological Urology (ESOU)

Regenerative medicine following radical cystectomy M. Pokrywczynska, Bydgoszcz (PL) Tissue engineering/regenerative medicine refers to broad ranges of biotechnological techniques that utilize cells and biomaterials to create neo- tissues and neo-organs in vitro or reconstitute functional tissues in vivo by initiate body’s natural ability to regenerate itself. The use of bowel tissue for urinary diversion following radical cystectomy, despite associated complications, remains so far the gold standard since no better alternative has been proved to be available. An emerging option is construction of urinary conduit or neo-bladder de novo from patient’s autologous cells. Such tissue engineered organs show great promise in reconstructive urology, but are faced with a number of challenges. Eur Urol Suppl 2016;15(2):46
