the layer. Includes seismic sections. New Zealand Geol. Survey, DSIR, P.O. Box 30 368, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. (msg) 83:3403 Powell, T.G., 1982. Petroleum geochemistry of the Verrill Canyon Formation: a source for Scotian Sheff hydrocarbons. Bull. can. Petrol. Geol., 30(2): 167-179.

The Verrill Canyon Formation is mature in the Sable subbasin and contains gas-prone, terrestrially-derived Type III organic matter; it is the source for hydrocarbons accumulated within Logan Canyon, Verrill Canyon, Mic Mac and Missisauga reservoirs. Oils and condensates in the Logan Canyon Formation at West Sable and Cohasset are more mature than those in older, deeper reservoirs. Inst. of Sed. and Pet. Geol., Survey of Canada, 3303 - 33rd St., N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2L 2A7, Canada. (msg) 83:3404 Roychoudhury, S.C. and S.V. Deshpande, 1982. Regional distribution of carbonate facies, Bombay offshore region, India. Am. Ass. Petrol. Geol. Bull., 66(10):1483-1496. Ce depletion in coarse sediment fractions 'is related to biogenic silica....Ce excess in fine fractions is probably of continental origin.' REE distribution in fine fractions is similar to that of associated nodules. REE incorporation mechanisms in sediments and nodules are discussed. Gr. des Sci. de la Terre, Lab. de Pierre Sue, C.E.N. The focus at this international colloquium was on the North Atlantic's deep sediments and their evolution since ~125,000 yrBP. Three themes divided the presentations: (l) morphology, structure, modes and facies of sedimentary bodies; (2) fine suspended particles--their origin, transport, deposition and importance in oceanic sedimentation; and (3) paleoclimatology and paleohydrology. There are 5 papers on deep-sea fans and 4 on mid-ocean ridge sediments. Dynamic processes, abyssal circulation, bioturbation, geochemistry, water mass movements, and erosion are but a few of the topics discussed. (ihz) 83:3407 O'Reilly, W. and F. Heller (eds.), 1981/82. Properties of natural and synthetic titanomagnetites and physical and chemical processes of magnetic overprinting in relation to geological events. Collection of papers from 2 symposia, 4th IAGA Scientific Assembly, Edinburgh, Great Britain, August 1981. Special issue. Phys. Earth planet. Interiors, 30(4):273-424; 27 papers. Papers here are 'aimed principally at the chemical basis of paleomagnetism, i.e., the influence of chemical composition on the magnetic properties of minerals,' but many other topics are covered as well. A sampling: intrinsic physical properties of titanomagnetite, properties of synthetic analogues to minerals, kinetics of the development of nonstoichiometry, domain structures, measured properties of various continental and oceanic field samples, alteration processes and effects of diagenesis and low temperature metamorphism, and paleomagnetic analysis of multicomponent remanence.

Researchers convened to provide up-to-date syntheses on the tectonics, igneous activity, geochronology, sedimentation, deposition, deformation, paleontology and metalliferous mineralization of this 'long-active continental margin belt'; the meeting emphasized work-in-progress. Selected papers include a review of southern Andes and northern Antarctic Peninsula igneous activity, plate tectonics of Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic southern South America, Antarctic Peninsula vs. Magallanes Basin ammonites, and Cenozoic ridge crest-trench interactions.
