(Conoco Incorporated, Ponca City, OK, USA) US Pat 4 728 224 (1 March 1988) In a floating tension leg platform containing a number of tensioned well risers which are connected so as to be constantly in tension between a subsea template located on the sea bottom and the floating platform, the well risers comprise longitudinally and circumferentially oriented aramid fibres embedded in a resin matrix. These composite structures have low axial stiffness permitting elongation to accommodate variations in the distance between the template and the platform without the use of a conventional riser tensioner. (Mitsubishi Rayon Company Limited, Tokyo, Japan) US Pat 4 729 605 (8 March 1988) A spoke for a bicycle wheel comprises a fibre-reinforced plastic rod with metal parts permanently adhesively bonded at either end. An external screw thread at one metal end allows the spoke to be threaded into the wheel rim and attached to the hub so that the spoke is not subjected to excessive shear stresses. The means of clamping the spring is described; the covering layer and part of the protective layer being removed from the spring between the connecting elements. Smith Corporation, Milwaukee, WI, USA) US Pat 4 732 371 (22 March 1988) A means of mounting a fibre-reinforced thermosetting resin leaf spring of uniform cross-sectional area for attachment to a vehicle frame is described. The mounting section is provided with longitudinally extending grooves and ridges for increased stiffness, the extremities of the ridges forming lands for engaging with the means of clamping the spring to the vehicle. Streamlined wheel for bicycle Monte, A. D. (Also Laboratori S.a.s. di Dr P., Sorbini & C., Milan, Italy) US Pat 4 732 428 (22 March 1988) The wheel comprises two half shells which when joined form a hollow wheel. Each half shell is made of fibre-reinforced plastic, is circular about an axis with thin cross-section, and has a rim portion. When the half shells are placed together the outer rims form a groove for receiving a tyre, the tyre forming a continuous curve with the outer convex surfaces of the wheel. Large airfoil structure and method for its manufacture Hahn, M. and Sperber, F. (MesserschmittBrlkow-Blohm GmbH, FRG) US Pat 4 732 542 (22 March 1988) A rotor blade with airfoil structure for a wind-driven power plant comprises three sections: a leading edge, a trailing edge, and a spar section in between; each being formed separately and then joined together to form the whole structure. The spar section has upper and lower laminate layers with a foam bar in between. The laminate is made from layers of fibre-reinforced material, some layers containing fibre with unidirectional orientation and others containing fibre having a thrust-transmitting orientation. Laminate layers also form the upper and lower airfoil skin segments.

The core portion of the moulding has the outer portion made from fibre bundles impregnated with unhardened thermosetting resin and is coated with a thermoplastic resin.
