1987 Annual Meeting November 8-12
Dallas
The Dallas Convention Center, site of the 1987 Annual Meeting, has undergone extensive expansion since the Academy last met there in 1977. The downtown facility has an entirely new look, with additional exhibit space, expanded registration lobbies and an impressive new wing of meeting rooms. Once again, the Academy will find it possible to hold all sessions, exhibits and instruction courses under one roof. Over the last several years, additional hotels, shopping centers and museums have appeared within the Dallas area, all of which will create an exciting new experience for those who attended Annual Meetings held there in the '70s. The Academy looks forward to returning to Dallas and hopes to see you there too. The meeting will offer an abundance of scientific symposia, papers, posters, exhibits, courses, and videotapes. Scientific sessions will be presented daily, Sunday through Thursday. Instruction courses will be offered Monday through Thursday. The abstract submission form for the 1987 scientific program, with a receipt deadline of May I, 1987, is printed on the following pages. Application forms for new instruction courses may be obtained by contacting H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, Secretary for Instruction, Annual Meeting Abstracts Office, American Academy of Ophthalmology, 490 Post Street, Suite 644, San Francisco, CA 94102. A letter from Dr. Hoskins, outlining general guidelines for submitting a course application and the course selection and evaluation process, can be found on the following pages. The receipt deadline for course application forms is February 2, 1987. Preregistration and housing forms will be mailed to members in Spring, 1987. Most Academy Fellows and Members will be eligible to attend the meeting at no charge as a benefit of membership, after payment of 1987 dues.

Abstract Preparation Checklist and Examples Scientific Program The Program Mvisory Committee has developed a checklist for abstract preparation with the objective of assisting prospective program participants in preparing the best possible abstract for submission. All abstracts are considered equally for acceptance and the quality of the abstract is the single most important factor in the Committee's decision. Please follow the checklist and use the examples of a high quality and poor quality abstract to assist you. Checklist for abstract content: 1. Is the title descriptive of the abstract?
2. Does the title avoid gratuitous statements and irrelevant information? Statements of author affiliation are not desirable, as abstracts need to be evaluated without knowledge of affiliations. 3. Does the abstract contain a concise statement which can be evaluated by an impartial observer, covering the following:
Abstracts with statements such as, "will be done," "will be studied," "will be underway," "will be analyzed;' cannot be accepted. 4. Has your material been previously published? If so, the abstract will be rejected. 5. Did you proofread your abstract? Conciseness, clarity, and care in the preparation of your abstract are important considerations in the Program Committee's deliberations. Misspellings and typographical errors do a disservice to your scientific work. If accepted, your abstract will appear exactly as typed in the printed program. 6. Is your abstract ten lines or less, has it been typed and does it fit entirely within the box provided? If not, please do not submit it. 7. Have you complied with and signed the proprietary interest statement (number 12 on form)? If not, your abstract will not be considered.
a. Why did you do the study? b. What did you do? c. What did you find? d. What does it mean? Example of a high quality abstract Title: Why the study was done

Identifies
Detection of treatable cases of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) requires early identification of susceptible subjects. We suspected a relationship of ARMD to refractive error and retrospectively reviewed 1382 cases of ARMD to test this hypothesis. We selected a control group of 1382 age and sex matched patients. Eighty-two percent (82S) of the ARMD patients had off-axis as ti., ...,.___, tism > 3.25 D compared to only O.SS of the control group (P<.0000001). eventyfour (74) of the high astigmatism ARMD patients were randomly selected to be reexamined. All were found to have spherical keratometer readings. Results suggest that high lenticular astigmatism may be a factor in patient susceptibility to ARMD and may permit the identification of ARMD suspects. Example of a poor abstract

lenticular Astigmatism as a Risk Factor for Age-related Macular Degeneration
The Seaside University Macular Degeneration Study
year at the Congress on World Blindness. we presented our data on age-relat d macular degeneration showing the effect of our new laser therapy. This year we reviewed t~ records of 1382 ARMD cases from the Seaside University Eye Clinic to val!Jlte the possibility that refractive error plays a part in this sease. We obtained keratometry readings on some of the patients to assess the cylindrical refractive error. Tentative results in one patient suggested the possibility of a high degree of lenticular astigmatism. Further work is in progress to assess the other patients in a similar manner. Results of the record review. the keratometer readings and a detailed statistical analysis will be presented and thoroughly reviewed including the significance of our find in s.
