Effects of calcium glycerophosphate and sodium fluoride on the induction in vivo of caries-like changes in human dental enamel, Arch. Oral Biol. 23 (1978) 655-661. The addition of calcium glycerophosphate to a 50 per cent sucrose solution used as a mouthrinse nine times a day did not reduce areas of demineralization on enamel surfaces of 8 volunteers who did not clean their teeth for 18 days. The areas of demineralization were assessed by the Caries Index of Fehr using optical changes as the criteria. No changes were observed in plaque accumulation and fall of plaque pH after rinsing with sucrose which could be directly associated with calcium glycerophosphate. Application of 2 per cent sodium fluoride appeared to inhibit development of these induced lesions, but with a limited number of subjects the effects were not significant statistically. G. J. An experiment was conducted to confirm the work of Fehr that optical changes in enamel similar to early caries occurred if subjects who did not clean their teeth for a fortnight rinsed regularly (nine times a day) with a 50 per cent sucrose solution. There was a significantly smaller number of enamel changes in subjects who did not rinse with sucrose. Assessment of changes were made from photographs taken at the beginning of the study and after the 14-day period of no oral hygiene. A further photograph was taken 2 months later after the subjects had rinsed daily with a 0.2 per cent sodium fluoride (remineralizing phase). G. J. Pearson
