This is an excellent book on the use of non-traditional therapeutic interventions in clinical practice. It is clearly written and well referenced, and the chapters are organised in a ‘user friendly’ manner. Chapters on the theoretical and conceptual basis of the therapies are comprehensive, and the rationales are well outlined. Chapters that follow demonstrate how these therapeutic interventions can be applied to a variety of clients in the clinical setting, and I found the case examples particularly useful, especially so in chapter 5 which focuses on interventions with the dying. It is refreshing to see techniques like deep muscle relaxation, guided imagery, focused breathing and therapeutic suggestion being applied not only to clients with emotional problems but also to clients with chronic pain, cancer and nausea. Although this book may be too revolutionary for many general nursing curricula, it should find a receptive audience amongst non-traditionalist psychiatric nurses and nursing schools. The applications to stress management in well populations e.g. staff groups, as well as sections on coping and weight loss, broaden the appeal and should make it attractive to nurse educators with responsibilities for continuing education and staff development courses.

curriculum of nurse training has been identified. Against this climate, the title of this book is bound to attract attention. Issues in crosscultural nursing is a collective of research based papers providing an international perspective on the subject. Starting off with a retrospective on the concept of culture, the book looks at ‘some of the issues that arise when an essentially Western occupation is transferred to a different cultural setting.’ A perspective on Maori health is then presented identifying the influences of the historic past as well as those factors associated with adaptation to Western lifestyles and expectation. This is followed by a look at initiatives in the United States and Australia. The above sections as well as the two English based contributions are ‘The use of an ethnographic method in psychiatric nursing’ (L Gonzales & S Sharma) and ‘Transcultural health visiting. Caring in a multiracial society’ (S M Dobson) are all written from a purely anthropological standpoint. This book will therefore no doubt be of interest to academics in that field internationally. The most disappointing aspect of this book and particularly of the two British based contributions is the authors’ clear lack of any recognition of the concept of racism and its impact on health experience, professional attitude and practice. Issues in crosscultural nursing therefore has-little of practical value to offer the nursing situation in Britain today.

It is generally accepted that an appreciation of cultural difference will no doubt enable a broadening of the range of professional skills. An urgent need for practical support, resources and methods to help incorporate multiracial issues into the
