REMOVAL OF A NAIL FROM THE APPENDIX

A 59-year-old man with schizophrenia arrived in the United States as a refugee from Uzbekistan with a history of ‘‘liver cancer.’’ A CT scan revealed no evidence of significant liver lesions. However, a bent nail was incidentally noted in the appendiceal lumen (A). The finding was confirmed by a plain radiograph of the abdomen (B). The patient denied nail ingestion and had no recent abdominal pain or fever. At colonoscopy, the nail was noted to be protruding from the appendiceal orifice (C). It was
