The effect of midazolam-fentanyl-ketamine mixed administration during laparoscopic surgery in swines C˘at˘alin Mics¸a ∗ , Manuela Pascal, Bogdan Alexandru Vit¸a˘ laru, C˘at˘alin Ivas¸cu, S¸tef˘anit¸a˘ Bogdan B˘al˘as¸c˘au, Alexandru Bociu Department of Clinical Sciences, University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Bucharest, Romania E-mail address: catalin [email protected] (C. Mics¸a). 40 swines were premedicated with ketamine (20 mg/kg) and xylazine (2 mg/kg), followed by induction with propofol (4 mg/kg. i.v.) and maintained with isoflurane. Two groups were formed. The first group (n = 30) received additional analgesia with a mix of midazolam (5 mg),fentanyl (50 ␮g),ketamine (500 mg), diluted in 500 ml of Lactated Ringer’s solution (M.F.K.). The second group (n = 10) did not receive any supplemental analgesia. Heart rate, SpO2 (pulsoximetry) and muscle tone (subjectively) were monitored. For the MFK group, the mean value of the heart rate was 80 bpm, compared to 115 bpm (P < 0.05 for the second group. The muscle tone for the MFK group during the surgical procedure was at level “2”, on an evaluation scale of 1–5 (1 representing the lack of tone and 5 representing a maximum muscle tone), and at level “3” for the second group. For the MFK group the medium maintanance isoflurane concentration was 1%, whereas for the second group, the value was of 2%. The administration of MFK ensured a better analgesia and muscle relaxation and reduced the isoflurane requirements. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.303 The biological properties of extract from seeds, peel and combs of red grapes Marselan Intra-ENTAV 980 Marina Yurievna Yazykova ∗ , Kulagina Kseniya Andreevna Department Of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Samara State University, Samara, Russia

tion, modern methods of treatment require new non-toxic natural antioxidants and an extract from red grapes Marselan Intra-ENTAV 980, obtained by means of technology, ensure maximum content and stability of biological substances with antioxidant effect. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.304 Preparation and evaluation of bacterial cellulose films with antibacterial properties Marina Yurievna Yazykova ∗ , Potapova Irina Anatolievna, Revin Victor Vasilievich, Sizova Arina Ilinichna, Eremenko Mariya Aleksandrovna Department of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Samara State University, Samara, Russia E-mail address: [email protected] (M.Y. Introduction to a molecule of cellulose reactive groups allows a film of the modified bacterial cellulose for transdermal therapeutic systems to be created. The aim was to make a cellulose ester with ␣-amino acid and to carry out its subsequent modification. Reaction of nucleophilic replacement at the mezil ester site of the cellulose with a solution of isoleucine sodium salt was used for this purpose. The structure of the received product was confirmed by an IK-spectroscopy method (emergence of strips of absorption in the field of 1600–1700 cm−1 of aliphatic amino acids). Existence of the free primary amino group in a molecule of cellulose ester enabled further modification by metilsulfochloride that leads to the substance containing a sulfanilamid fragment, and it assumes then the existence of antibacterial properties. Mezilata cellulose was prepared by the reaction of metilsulfochloride on cellulose in the ratio 1:1 in pyridine at 0 ◦ C. For the strengthening of antibacterial action the film of the modified bacterial cellulose was impregnated by colloidal silver. This strategy allows the system of combining rather fast desorption of silver particles in a wound surface and the prolonged action of the immobilized molecules, containing a sulfanilamid fragment. The product was active against Staphylococcus aureus. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.305

Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and a biological system’s ability to detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage. A novel technique was used to obtain and stabilize extract from seeds, peel and combs of red grapes Marselan Intra-ENTAV 980 with high antioxidant activity. The antioxidant property of the extract was determined by the inhibition of chemiluminescence response in the ROS-generating system in the presence of luminol at 420 nm. As the criterion of the antioxidant activity concentrations at which the integrated amount of chemiluminescence for 10 min decreased by 50% with dihydroquercetin as a control were used. As a result the extract antioxidant activity was 50% against DHA. Additionally, the antioxidant activity of the extract was determined by “DFFH scavenging activity assay” method. Absorbance was measured using a Shimadzu UV 1800 spectrophotometer at 517 nm. The antioxidant activity of grape extract was equal to 80.7%. Moreover the results showed that extract expressed slight (10%) antiproliferative activity on carcinoma cells in vitro. In addi-

There is a strong connection between the renal function and the degree of dehydration in dogs. The kidney during dehydration period may develop a decrease vascular perfusion, therefore the renal vascular indices may suffer variation from the normal values. The aim of this paper is to evaluate if the renal vascular indices are modified in dehydrated dogs. a period of 7 months, from September 2014 to March 2015. We examined a number of 17 dogs with different genders and breeds, over 4 months old, which presented clinical signs of dehydration, without evolving a renal disease. In all cases the ultrasound examination was performed with ESAOTE MyLab 30 Gold VET machine, and the RI and PI values were automatically calculated. After performing the first ultrasonography examination the mean value for RI was 0.88 ± 0.12, and for PI was 1.62 ± 0.18. All dogs received fluids according to the dehydration degree, and another ultrasonography examination was performed. After the proper rehydration the mean value for RI was 0.68 ± 0.04 and for PI was 1.52 ± 0.14. The results of this study indicates that the mean renal vascular indices are slightly increased in dehydrated dogs than the mean values for the same cases after rehydration, in which the results were between the normal values. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.306 A comparison of two different surgical techniques in order to reposition the third eyelid gland in two dogs Andreea Elena Georgescu ∗ , Iuliana Ionascu, Jacqueline Mocanu, Bianca Bofan, Lia Ion, Constantin Vlagioiu Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Bucharest, Romania E-mail address: andreeaelena [email protected] (A.E. Georgescu). Two 5 years old Cane Corso dogs presented at the Ophthalmology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest with bilateral prolapse of the third eyelid, everted cartilage, and with left eye proliferation of the bulbar conjunctiva. The aim of this paper was to evaluate which of the repositioning techniques is suitable for this breed. In one of the dogs the resection of the cartilage and the repositioning of the gland were made on the inner surface of the third eyelid, the incisions were continuously closed with absorbable material 6/0 Vicryl, with the ends of the suture left open to drain the tear film. In the other case the third eyelid gland and its cartilage were approached on the outer surface and also one third of the gland was ablated. In both cases the knot was placed on the palpebral surface in order to protect to cornea. Local treatment consisted in antibiotic collyre instillation for 7 days postoperatively. An Elizabethan collar was not necessary. At one week reexamination, the glands with ablation were very well positioned, while the glands without resection were still visible in the medial canthus. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.307

Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne disease caused by spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex and transmitted by ticks belonging to the Ixodes genus. It affects a wide range of wild and domestic animals but only a small part show clinical symptoms. The importance of dogs as sentinel species had been previously highlighted because the dogs are the host for vector ticks sharing habitats and being in close physical contact with humans. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the exposure of dogs to B. burgdorferi using immunological tests. Our study included a total of 49 dogs (32 males and 17 females) aged between 0.8 and 16 years. The serum of dogs was tested for the presence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. using immunoblot assay. The positive results obtained from the screening of all 49 dogs were confirmed using species-specific immunoblot assays. Overall, 20.4% (10/49) of the samples were positive for B. burgdorferi s.l. expressing proteins like p41 (flagellin), OmpC, OmpA, p100. Immunoblot analysis confirmed the presence of antibody against B. afzeli in 5 cases (10.2%), B. burgdorferi sensu stricto in one case (2%), and the remaining were more likely infected with other Borrelia species. Our results show that investigation of exposure of dogs to B. burgdorferi can provide valuable information on the potential risk of infection with this pathogen in humans.
