Perinatal Mortality Statistics To the .Editoi'S: We have rearl with interest Dr. Orvan H. Hes~' paper, ":E'actors Influencing· Perinutal Mortality in Cesarean Section," appearing in thr AMERicAl\ JotrRNAL OF 0BS'l'l';TRWS ,\1\ D GYNECOLOGY 75: 376, February, 1958. Dr. Hess has correctly stated that in New York City (page 377), "a 19.5 per et'nt dP· crease in the perinatal mortality rate occurred during the years 1946 to 1953, with a dPclinP of 12.0 per cent in early neonatal deaths (i.e., under 1 week of age)." 1'hese statistics wen' published by one of us (E. M. G.) as Table 1 in a paper, "Perinatal Mortality," ,T. A. M. "'· 159: 244, September 24, 1955. We presume through oversight Dr. Hess failed to giw hihli· ographic reference thereto. Dr. Hess further states (page 377), "In 1953, the perinatal mortality rate in Xew York City was reported to have been 29.7 per 1,000, while in 1955 it had decrease
Reply by Dr. Hess To the Editors: The statistics in the letter of Drs. E. M. Gold, H .•Tacobziner, and J. Pakter whil'h are quoted in paragraph 2 and in the portion of paragraph 3, "In 1953, the perinatal mortality rate in New York City was reported to have been 29.7 per 1,000," were published by Edwin M. Gold, M.D., in a paper entitled "Perinatal Mortality," J. A. M. A. 159: 244, Sept. 24, 1955. I sincerely regret that, through oversight, reference to his important contribution 011 this subject failed to appear in the bibliography of my paper, '':E'aetors Infiuencing- Perinatal Mortality in Cesarean Section," AM. J. OBST. & GYNEC. 75: 376, F'ehruary, 1955. The statement in my paper that "in 1955 it had decreased to 20 per 1,000 births" wa~ an error in typing of an early revision of the manuscript. The information, submitted in th .. letter of Drs. Gold, Jacobziner, and Pakter, that the perinatal mortality rate in New York City was 30.4 per 1,000 for 1955 indicates that, in comparison with 29.7 per 1,000 for 1953. a decrease in perinatal mortality rate in New York City did not oceur during that 2 yeat· period. 79 TRUMBULL STREET 0RVAK \V.
