4 April I985 Dear D r Taylor, T h a n k you for your letter of I2 March I985 referring to the discussion paper on the joint planning of training grade numbers which was issued for consultation in July I984. T h e r e has been a wide measure of agreement on the broad principles set down in the discussion paper and I am pleased that this view is shared by the Council of your Society. Many comments were received concerning the need for national, rather than regional, planning for small specialties and I note your views on this in relation to your own specialty. T h e Joint Planning Advisory Committee which it is proposed to set up to carry out the task of joint planning is not yet in being. T h e issue of small specialty planning is one which the Committee will obviously need to address and your comments will be most helpful.
