I acknowledge the possibility that used crankcase oil may contain carcinogenic components. However there seems to be an absence of definitive studies establishing the carcinogenic character of exposure to used crankcase oil. The authors are also unaware of any evidence indicating an increase in skin cancer for service station attendants, repairmen, mechanics and others who are continually and occupationally exposed to used crankcase oil. Perhaps some precautions such as the use of tongs or rubber gloves may be indicated but our position is that the recommendation for the use of used crankcase oil is valid and is an important contribution to much-needed worldwide conservation measures.
