Letter to the editor Reply to the letter to the editor The comments of Professor Jones on the potential catalytic and flow effects in self-heating experiments on biomass are very useful. He claims that catalytic effects introduced by the presence of a steel basket or a thermocouple are negligible in such experiments. We agree with this conclusion. In our experiments, only the thermocouple (shielded type K) was present. This thermocouple most likely has a lower catalytic activity than the mineral content of the biomass itself (straw) and furthermore it was located in the center of the sample
