esearch and Markets Ltd of Dublin, Ireland, has added the publication entitled ‘Automotive Window and Exterior Sealing Systems’ to the range of products that it offers. The automotive market is likely to undergo a major paradigm shift over the next few years as fuel economy takes a renewed urgency for conventional and alternative power-trains from 2017–2025, says the study, conducted by US-based ITB Group Ltd. This change will require many modifications to the design, material selection and operation of current vehicles. Windows and sealing systems are no exception, especially with respect to mass reduction, insulation against high and low ambient temperatures and acoustic performance. The market has witnessed a number of changes in the supply base over the last three years, says the report. These began prior to the economic crisis of 2008/2009 and accelerated in 2011. Based on the Reynolds equation and the dynamic operation conditions of the cylinder liner and piston ring of a CY6102type diesel engine, this study develops a theoretical model of the load-carrying capacity and film thickness for the first compressed ring. Using the theoretical model, the effects of the texturing parameters on the load-carrying capacity and film thickness were investigated under different velocities, and the range of optimum texturing parameters was established. An optimal texturing design method for the cylinder liner was also proposed. In this study, viscoelastic effects on the performance of a hydraulic rod seal are examined using a visco-elastohydrodynamic model. The model consists of coupled macroscale and micro-scale deformation and contact mechanics analyses and micro-scale fluid mechanics analysis. Dynamic mechanical analysis and a constrained optimisation method are used to extract the spectrum of relaxation time scales and corresponding instantaneous elastic moduli associated with the seal polymer, required by the model. Simulation results show that seal performance, including leakage prevention and friction force, depends on the relationship between the characteristic time constants of the polymer’s molecular chains and the seal cycle frequency.
