It could serve as an appropriate statement to say that the way forward in the research of plastics to energy and fuel is a matter that is ever evolving. The truth of the matter is that interest in this subject is always reignited. This is due to two factors that can be summarized as (1) the economical potential that plastic-to-energy holds and (2) the image that often leads to the public’s amazement and affection to the matter. The latter is quite important nowadays where we actually notice that a certain awe is obtained when the statement that “plastics can be turned into fuel” is delivered. There still exist a number of research gaps where various groups around the world try to address on a daily basis. To compete with the ease and economical short-term benefits of mechanical recycling, plastics thermochemical conversion required high end product generation from thermal units discussed within this book. To do so, emphasis is now turned to use very selective catalysts and even spent ones to compete with noncatalytic units and the demanding market specifications for green fuels. Upscaling the work into pilot and eventually to industrial scale has made degradation kinetics of
plastic waste a matter of great importance. A number of academic and research institutes actually compete nowadays in publishing their results on the subject matter. This induces research on waste blends containing biodegradables and reclaimed plastic solid waste from various landfill and disposal sites. The integration of the energy produced from plastics into various existing industrial setups is a matter that has bested many research groups. The national grid often relies on a basket of energy sources that consumers expect not to alter or fluctuate. One of the aspects addressed nowadays is the solar pyrolysis of many polymeric materials, where the energy harnessed from the sun is used to heat the polymers to retrieve the desired products. On the whole, and in order to have the required diversified energy basket that many governments around the world seem to emphasize its green sources, support on these topics must be given with the aim of delivering results for a better and a more green planet that can sustain life for many generations to come.
