T h e U-3010 UVNisible spectrophotometer by Hitachi Scientific Instruments is now fully automated due to the addition of control facilities for autosampling devices, using UV Solutions software. UV Solutions is a 32-bit program which allows analysis methods for photometry, wavelength scanning and time scanning to be set up for quantitative and qualitative analyses and kinetics studies. T h e latest version offers support for a sample sipper, AS3000 intelligent autosampler and a 6 cell positioner, allowing automated analytical methods to be developed and saved. Many analyses can be carried out unattended. Results can be transferred instantly into Excel for further processing.

T h e y are suitable for both solid phase synthesis and protein applications such as affinity chromatography. T h e resins are economical in comparison to polystyrene-polyethylene glycol hybrids. T h e y retain the solvation properties of pure polyethylene glycol (PEG) but are more convenient to use. C L E A R resins are reproduced in bead form and they swell in a wide range of solvents including water, methylene chloride or D M F , as well as relatively non-polar solvents such as T H F or dioxane. HPLC system
Perkin-Elmer has introduced the Series 200 MS HPLC system, an optimized microbore high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system for performing automated analysis with the PE SCIEX ® API 150 MCA mass chromatographic analyzer. The new system is suitable for increasing productivity in the analysis of proteins, oligonucleotides and polysaccharides as well as pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic samples. High capacity centrifuge Beckman Instruments Inc. have announced the release of the new Avanti ® J-20 series high performance centrifuge. T h e Avanti J-20's large chamber accommodates Bcckman's new J-Lite TM rotor, the JLA-8.1000, specifically designed for rapid, largescale centrifugation. This new rotor delivers g-forces up to 15,900 × g at 8000 rpm and volumes up to 6 litres. All Avanti J models feature a hightorque drive system that accelerates and brakes in half the time of conventional high-speed drives and delivers higher speeds and g-forces with larger volumes. An SR drive, which eliminates brushes and magnets, delivers high torque even at low speeds and requires little maintenance. T h e Avanti J is imbalance tolerant, so tubes can be easily balanced by eye to within 5%.

Many conventional washbottles produce slow dribbling due to a buildup ofvapour pressure inside the bottle forcing solvent into and through the spout - - a potential safety hazard. Digital analysis Boehringer Mannheim has teamed up with Photometrics and Rodenstock to produce the Lumi-lmagerTM to provide accurate quantification and digital analysis in a variety of non-radioactive, chemiluminescent techniques. A high-performance CCD chip source from Photometrics provides the LumiImagerTM with a 1.3 Megapixel resolution of 1280 x 1024. Other features include a Rodenstock-supplied focus-stabilized lens. Software Oxford Molecular Group PLC has begun shipping CAChe 3.0, its software package for experimental chemists, for Windows ® 95 and NT. This new Windows release includes the ProjectLeaderTM interface that allows chemists to solve research problems by focusing on properties instead of complex computational methods. Chemists can explain activities of compounds, model reactions and predict a wide variety of chemical and physical properties for small molecules, including those containing metals.
