Whereas, tobacco use and exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke remain the leading cause of preventable disease and death worldwide (World Health Organization, 2009), and cause untold suffering; and Whereas, it is important to protect all students from the serious health risks of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke (USDHHS, 2006); and Whereas, the 2012 Surgeon General Report (USDHHS, 2012a) revealed that the tobacco industry continues to market and advertise products to young adults, at a time when they are most vulnerable to societal and environmental influences; and Whereas, although adult smoking prevalence is decreasing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012), almost a quarter of full-time college students ages 18 to 22 years currently smoke, and the number of young people initiating smoking after age 18 is increasing; and Whereas, college campuses offer an opportunity for a tobacco-free environment and more than 1,000 campuses have already gone smoke-free or tobaccofree (American for Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, 2012); and Whereas, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Howard Koh, urged college campuses to go smoke-free to protect the health of 20 million people on college campuses (USDHHS, 2012b); and Whereas, less than half the U.S. population is protected by 100% smokefree workplace, restaurant, and bar law and most local and state laws do not include college campuses (American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, 2012); and Whereas, nurses are highly respected by the public and valued as role models of health, and nursing students deserve a healthy place to live and learn; and
Whereas, smoking among nursing students continues to be a serious concern; therefore, be it Resolved, that the American Academy of Nursing urges all nursing leaders to promote smoke-free environments in their schools of nursing and college campuses.
