Response to ‘‘A blown opportunity’’

S

afety is an important priority for ACS, and opportunities to support it are sought, encouraged, and welcome. Many safety issues merit further discussion, but this note will address only my Presidential Symposium on Safety and not other safety issues, which deserve more time. The fact that the subject of safety is important to me is evidenced by my initiating a Presidential Symposium on

Safety, personally organizing one session to include three CEOs of important science organizations as speakers, and insuring their participation by personally handling their invitations. Unfortunately, the session which I organized was unable to proceed. Support for the Town Hall Meeting was not pulled because it was about safety. Support was pulled from the Town Hall Meeting because some

advertised speakers had not consented and declined to speak in it. Perhaps in the future, there will be another opportunity for a symposium on safety which could include CEOs of major science organizations. It should be worthy of support then, as it was this year. Donna J. Nelson
